Microbicide activity of clove essential oil (Eugenia caryophyllata)

Abstract: Clove essential oil, used as an antiseptic in oral infections, inhibits Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria as well as yeast. The influence of clove essential oil concentration, temperature and organic matter, in the antimicrobial activity of clove essential oil, was studied in this paper, through the determination of bacterial death kinetics. Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were the microorganisms selected for a biological test. To determine the temperature effect, they… Show more

“…Another plant is Syzygium aromaticum (clove) which is one of the interesting plants with antifungal activity. The clove oil from S. aromaticum and eugenol are wildly used in dental medicine because they exhibit useful antiseptic, analgesic, and anaesthetic effects (10,11). Some research studies have reported antifungal activity of clove oil and eugenol against several yeasts and fungi (10)(11)(12)(13).…”

“…The crude essential oil of clove is classified and generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (21), and it is widely used in the food industry as a flavoring additive. Clove oil has been shown to have a wide range of antimicrobial activities against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including major human pathogens, like Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli (22). Clove has also been tested successfully in food systems against Listeria monocytogenes (23).…”

“…[41] A study done by L. Nuñez and M. D' Aquino (2012) to test the activity of clove essential oil against S.aureus, P.aeuriginosa and E.coli showed that E.coli was most sensitive to the clove oil amongst the three pathogenic bacteria. [42] The presence of eugenol makes clove oil a very potent antibacterial agent. Eugenol has ability to denature proteins in addition to reacting with cell membrane phospholipids leading to change in their permeability, thus inhibiting many gram positive and gram negative bacteria, yeast etc.…”
