Diagnosis of paratuberculosis in cattle: microbiological culture, serology and PCR

Abstract: The aim of this study was to confirm clinical diagnosis of paratuberculosis in two cows showing suggestive clinical signs of the disease. Based on clinical signs, in culture and in IS900 PCR results from the individual milk samples it was possible to diagnose paratuberculosis in the cows studied.

“…Consumption of milk, and possibly meat, from infected animals is currently viewed as a potential source of zoonotic transmission of the pathogen from animals to humans. MAP has been isolated from retail milk and dairy products in many parts of the world (Grant et al 2002;Ayele et al 2005;Ellingson et al 2005;Carvalho et al 2012;Paolicchi et al 2012) suggesting that the pathogen can enter the human food chain and that current high temperature, short-time pasteurization may not always ensure complete inactivation of this pathogenic bacterium.…”
