Characterizations of a new Cordyceps cicadae isolate and production of adenosine and cordycepin

Abstract: Cordyceps is a fastidious pathogenic fungus infecting insects, and recent years have witnessed rapid progress in its medical properties. In this study, a wild isolate, C. cicadae MP12, was characterized through in vitro cultivation and its nuclear small-subunit (SSU) ribosomal DNA (rDNA) data. In vitro culture of C. cicadae MP12 was established by growing its fruiting bodies in a solid matrix. C. cicadae MP12 was inoculated into Cryptotympana atrata cicada pupae for in vivo culture, where the fungi developed i… Show more

“…Moreover, some new compounds were found in fungal hybrids. A strain from the cell fusion of C. cicadae and C. militaris produces different SMs including two new compounds, 2- (31), and 3isobutyl-6-isobutylpiperazine-2,5-dione (32). 79 The AChE inhibitory activity of all the compounds was tested, and the results showed that compounds 23 and 27-29 at a concentration of 50 mg mL À1 showed weak inhibitory activity against AChE with inhibition rates of 15.45%, 17.89%, 15.07%, and 16.41%, respectively.…”

“…Other studies exploring bioactive metabolites identified different adenosine analogs and cyclodepsipeptides such as cordycecin A and beauvericins in C. cicadae [ 19 , 20 ]. Reports on whether or not C. cicadae can produce the anticancer compound cordycepin (i.e., 3′-deoxyadenosine) are inconsistent [ 21 , 22 ]. The potent immunosuppressant drug Fingolimod was developed from the atypical amino acid myrocin produced by Isaria sinclairii [ 23 ].…”

“…The genus Cordyceps is a group of entomopathogenic fungi that form fruiting bodies and live mainly on insects and other arthropods (Wu et al, 2011;Zhu et al, 2011). Many Cordyceps species are parasites of the cicada larvae (Wang et al, 2012). The infection process begins when spores of the fungus geminate and invade the body of the cicada larvae.…”
