Arcobacter butzleri: first isolation report from chicken carcasses in costa rica

Abstract: Arcobacter butzleri isolation from chicken carcasses in Costa Rica is reported for the first time. The isolated strains (P and R) were presumptively identified by their phenotypic characteristics. Definitive identification was made using a multiplex PCR assay for the simultaneous detection and identification of Arcobacter butzleri, Arcobacter cryaerophilus and Arcobacter skirrowii. These first isolations indicate the necessity of further investigation about the prevalence, distribution, ecology and interactions… Show more

“…Reports of Arcobacter occurrence were few from North America earlier, but the current status shows that the pathogen has been reported from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica and also from Mexico (Arias et al 2011). The use of various molecular tools in Portugal has revealed that Arcobacter was prevalent in pediatric people (Ferreira et al 2014c).…”

“…The genus Arcobacter was proposed in 1991 to classify organisms initially named " aerotolerant Campylobacters" ; Arcobacter and the genera Campylobacter, Helicobacter, and Sulfurospirilium now form the family Campylobacteraceae (2,18). Arcobacter species can be differentiated from Campylobacter because of their ability to grow at lower temperatures (15 to 30°C) and under aerobic conditions, hence, its previous classifi cation as " aerotolerant Campylobacters" (6).…”

“…Nevertheless, Arcobacter has been isolated from poultry, milk, shellfish, and meat products worldwide (2, 4, 8, 17, 24, 28-30, 36, 37), including three reports from Costa Rica (2,11,15).…”
