Molecular analysis of the iap gene of Listeria monocytogenes isolated from cheeses in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil

Abstract: The polymorphic region sequences in the iap gene were analyzed in 25 strains of Listeria monocytogenes isolated from cheeses in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, and compared with reference strains. This investigation distinguished two clusters of L. monocytogenes: I (20 strains) and II (5 strains).

“…This result shows the low degree of polymorphism in the inlA and inlB regions, which has already been shown in previous studies 6,16,17 . This has also already been observed in other genic regions associated with virulence of L. monocytogenes, such as the mpl, prfA and iap genes 8,18 .…”

“…Although Brazilian beef and poultry are exported worldwide, limited studies exist which assess the ribotype patterns and virulence potential of Brazilian isolates of L. monocytogenes (Pimenta et al 1999;Lemes-Marques et al 2007;Mello et al 2008). Thus, the objective of this study was to employ molecular and phenotypic subtyping schemes and virulent traits analyses tools to characterize the strains and to establish a possible linkage of pathogen transmission from food to humans.…”

“…The L. monocytogenes 55 (Lm55) strain was isolated from cheese by the National Agricultural Laboratory of Rio Grande do Sul State (LANAGRO/RS) of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply (MAPA/Brazil), and serotyped at the Oswaldo Cruz Institute (State of Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil) as serotype 1/2a (de Mello et al 2008;Nes et al 2010).…”
