Embedding strength of fully-threaded dowel-type fasteners in cross-laminated timber: an experimental study

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to experimentally evaluate the embedding strength of dowel-type fasteners in Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT), observing the effect of lamellae orientation and the dowel diameters. Thereby, CLT specimenswith three layers of lamellaeand solid timber specimens were produced and tested under loads at 0º and 90º with the direction of the grain, considering five dowel diameters. The results showed that CLT embedding strength depends on the dowel diameter in the two investigated directions. … Show more

“…It is critical to consider the bamboo culm's bearing capacity while employing a dowel-type fastener in bamboo connections. Dowel embedding may result in localized fiber compression and deformation, which may cause failure if the bearing strength is insufficient [17]. In terms of connections, there is a lack of studies in the Philippines for local bamboo species.…”

“…For the CLT with a lamination thickness larger than 20 mm, an ideal agreement was achieved between the numerical behavior and the experimental behavior. Maia et al [20] evaluated the embedment strength of doweltype fasteners inserted in CLT plane side, and found the embedment strength depended on the dowel diameter significantly in the case of the loading angle of 0 degree or 90 degree.…”
