This aim of this work is to present an analysis of the influence of impregnation against biological demand, realized with saline solution of CCB (Chromated Copper Borate preservative) by vacuumpressure process, on physical-mechanical properties of tropical wood species Simarouba sp., Cedrelinga catenaeformis and Erisma uncinatum Warm. In theory, such process could increase the number of surface defects in wood pieces and reduce its strength properties. To investigate this influence, the complete species characterization was carried out in two conditions (without treatment and CCB treated wood). Tukey's multiple comparisons test (5% significance level) was applied. In addition, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) photomicrographs were obtained with the energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) to investigate preservative presence at the cellular level. Results permitted to conclude that CCB impregnation process did not affect physical-mechanical properties of the studied species.

This study aimed to present a solution in glued laminated timber to replace frame structures built in reinforced concrete and metallic structure, which are common in agricultural buildings in western Paraná such as those destined to laying poultry house building by agricultural cooperatives. Structural behavior of frames build from Araucaria angustifolia glued boards and vegetable oil-based polyurethane adhesive was evaluated. Tests were carried out to characterize wood and adhesive to obtain verification/sizing parameters. Initially, a full-scale structural project was conducted to meet standard laying poultry house specifications. Afterwards, five units of straight three-articulated frames on a 1:2.5 reduced scale were designed, built, and subjected to strength tests until breaking. They were built with a 2-meter free span and a 15° slope, suitable for using metal roof tiles. The average for structure ultimate strength was 4.14 times the design load. Structures had satisfactory mechanical performance and displacements lower than those recommended by NBR 7190 (1997) standard (ABNT). Therefore, building glued frames with Parana pine boards and vegetable oil-based glue is technically feasible.

RESUMO O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a espécie madeireira Hevea brasiliensis (seringueira) visando o uso para a fabricação de celulose e papel. Foram cortadas três árvores do clone Pb 235. Obteve-se discos das posições 0, 25, 50, 75 e 100% da altura comercial. Foi realizada análise química, física e anatômica da madeira. A espécie apresentou valores médios de holocelulose de 80,83%, compatível com a madeira de Eucalipto tradicionalmente empregada na produção de celulose e papel. Em relação aos valores obtidos de dimensão média das fibras (comprimento, largura, diâmetro do lume e espessura da parede), estes foram próximos aos encontrados na literatura. Com relação ao Índice de Runkel, foi possível classificar a fibra de Hevea brasiliensis como boa para fabricação de papel, mas com relação à Fração Parede, a fibra se encontra acima do limite. Já para coeficiente de flexibilidade, o mesmo encontra-se abaixo do recomendado e o índice de enfeltramento encontra-se na faixa ideal. A densidade básica média obtida foi de 0,541 g/cm³, valor próximo ao encontrado na literatura, o que possibilitou a sua classificação como madeira de média densidade. Após análise dos resultados foi possível considerar a madeira de Hevea brasiliensis como uma espécie promissora para fabricação de celulose e papel.
