This paper considers the influence of multiple ink jet printed layers and woven fabric thread count on the colour fastness to washing of printed polyester textile products. The goal was to investigate the possibility for optimisation of the number of ink layers and thread count in order to increase print quality and colour fastness to washing. Materials with the same composition and different thread counts were printed ranging from one to five ink layers. The samples were subjected to washing process after which colour fastness was examined according to appropriate standards. The colour fastness was judged subjectively by trained professionals using the standard grey scale, and objectively using spectrophotometric measurements, with calculation of colour differences caused by the washing. Surface changes were observed using SEM analysis. Results indicate that multiple layer printing gives more saturated colour due to better ink coverage, but on the other hand it enhances the ink wash-out effect. The research suggests the possibility of optimising the number of ink layers in relation to thread count number when print quality and colour fastness to washing is the objective.

PurposeThe research aims to examine the varying influence of printed inkjet ink on the warm/cool feeling and air permeability of printed textile materials and thus on the thermal properties of printed garments.Design/methodology/approachThe influence of different number of printing pass and different tone value (TV) coverage was examined. The tested samples were printed with water-based pigment inkjet inks with 10, 50 and 100% TVs with one, three and five printing passes. The tested samples were subjected to thermal characteristics testing by measuring the warm/cool feeling and air permeability before and after printing.FindingsThe research results showed that there is an increase in the value of the warm/cool feeling by increasing the amount of applied ink on the textile material, which occurs by increasing the TVs and the number of printing pass. At the same time values of air permeability decrease by increasing the number of printing pass, as well as by increasing TVs.Originality/valueBased on the results, mathematical models of the dependence of the warm/cool feeling value of printed textile materials on the air permeability and parameters of digital inkjet printing were created. These models are important in clothing design because they show in advance the values of the warm/cool feeling of the clothes being designed and thus enable the design of clothes for different purposes with optimal esthetic and thermal properties.

During exploitation different effects influence printed textile products and one of the most common is washing treatment. It causes modification of textile structure and textile fibres. The aim of this research is to determine the influence of the washing treatment, the washing treatment temperature and characteristics of printed material on print quality parameters of screen printed cotton knitted textile materials. It will be obtained using spectrophotometric analysis and macro non-uniformity analysis via the mottling index. The research results show that increasing the number of washing treatments, and also increasing of washing temperature, causes an increase of colour difference between washed and unwashed samples. It also shows that substrate characteristics have great influence on colour differences. Besides that, washing treatment also causes noticeable changes of print mottle, which are, again, also dependent on substrate characteristics.
