Higher than normal plasma Iinterleukin-6 concentrations in brazilian patients with mood disorders

Abstract: The aim of this work was to study the plasma concentration of IL-6 by ELISA in the patients with mood disorders and normal healthy donors. The plasma concentration of IL-6 was higher in the patients than in the control healthy group. Results suggested that IL-6 could serve as an immunological marker in mood disorder pathogenesis as well.

“…In contrast, stress may exacerbate immunopathology, if the enhanced immune response is dysregulated following prolonged activation, as seen during chronic stress [ 9 ]. Chronic stress has also been shown to alter the expression of cytokines, such as interleukin (IL)-1 and IL-6 [ 10 ]. In studies of the splenocytes of subordinate animals, high levels of the proinflammatory cytokines including IL-6 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α were secreted [ 11 - 13 ].…”

“…Significantly higher TNF-α concentrations are associated with lower hippocampal volumes suggesting association between inflammation and neuronal damage. [27][28][29] A study conducted by Nishuty showed that patients who are depressed will have an increase in the inflammatory biomarker IL-6 compared to CRP and also in cases of depressed patients who are resistant to antidepressant drugs showing the same thing. Nishuty's research in cases of depression showed an increase in IL-6 concentration of 2.94 pg/mL.…”

“…Psychological test results also showed that in the treatment group, patients got better condition than the control group after getting art therapy the level of anxiety The results of this research indicated that the physical-mental conditions are essentially related to each other and may affect the amount of cytokine IL-6 in the blood. The condition of a person with a mental disorder such as major depressive disorder may increase the amount of cytokine IL-6 because it can affect to proinflammatory cytokines [15]- [17].…”
