“…Total length has been widely used in predicting body mass, body volume and growth curve in Amazonian manatees. In this regard, most animal species show a regression coefficient weight/length, about 3 [31], which has been evident in several aquatic mammals [32][33][34][35] including the Amazonian manatee reporting a regression coefficient of 3.122 [27] and 4 [26]. However, the regression coefficient obtained in the present study was higher (b = 80.1) than previously reported.…”

“…A giant otter consumes about 10 percent of its body weight of food per day, which, considering the maximum size attained by an adult (30 kg) (Rosas et al . ), corresponds to 3 kg of fish (Duplaix , Carter et al . ).…”

“…The per capita consumption of fish was estimated at about 0.55 kg per day for a human community on the Solimões River (Batista et al 1998). A giant otter consumes about 10 percent of its body weight of food per day, which, considering the maximum size attained by an adult (30 kg) (Rosas et al 2009), corresponds to 3 kg of fish (Duplaix 1980.…”

“…Until recently the maximum giant otter body size mentioned in the literature was tentative and dimensions were said to vary between 1.5 to 2.4m (Cabrera and Yepes, 1940;Harris, 1968;Duplaix, 1980;Santos, 1984). However, a body weight/length relationship study carried out by Rosas et al (2009a) with captive otters revealed that adults measure typically between 1.5-1.8m and weigh up to 30kg, and there is no significant difference between size and weight of giant otter males and females in the Amazon region. The mean total length of adult otters in captivity is 1.65m (tail 65cm) and the mean weight is 22-26kg (Sykes-Gatz, 2005).…”
