Electrolytic treatment applied to the industrial effluent containing persistent wastes monitored by Bartha respirometric assays

Abstract: The effluent of a rubber chemical antioxidant and antiozonant producer industry, with high content of organic material was subjected to electrolytic process. To evaluate the speed of stabilization of the eletroctrolyzed effluents, and to evaluate the biodegradation the respirometric test of Bartha and Pramer was used. The monitoring of the biodegradation of the effluent, after different periods of electrolysis show that the ideal time of electrolysis was 10 and 25 min. It was concluded that the eletrolytic pro… Show more

“…This sample showed low level of contamination by unknown fuel, possibly due to leaks in the pipes and ground infiltrations. Until performing the biodegradation experiments, samples were stored at 5 o C. In order to verify the influence of the bioaugmentation technique in the biodegradation of diesel oil, batch biodegradation experiments (48 days) were carried out in Bartha biometer flasks (250 mL) used to measure the microbial CO 2 production (Bartha and Pramer, 1965;Régis and Bidoia, 2005;Inazaki et al, 2004;Mariano et al, 2007a). Mineralization studies involving measurements of total CO 2 production can provide excellent information on the biodegradability potential of hydrocarbons (Balba et al, 1998).…”

“…The respirometric assay consists of the determination of the CO 2 generated by the degradation process of organic substances. Respirometric method is a good alternative to monitor the biodegradation of industrial effluents as demonstrated by Régis and Bidoia (2005) and Oliveira et al (2007). These studies showed the respirometric efficiency in monitoring aerobic microbiological activity in industrial wastes treatment.…”
