Spatial and temporal variations of diurnal ichthyofauna on surf-zone of São Francisco do Itabapoana beaches, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil

Abstract: Spatial and temporal variations of diurnal ichthyofauna and the environmental variables influences on its distribution were studied at the surf-zone of three beaches of São Francisco do Itabapoana, northern coast of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. From August/1999 to August/2000, three beach seine hauls were made monthly, and environmental variables were recorded. A total number of 4,562 fishes (74,155g) were sampled at the three beaches, where estuarine-dependent species prevailed (44%), followed by marine (31%), est… Show more

“…A ictiofauna das duas praias foi caracterizada pelo domínio de formas jovens, de pequeno porte, com tamanho variando entre 10,0mm e 439,0mm de comprimento total, que utilizam estas praias como áreas de crescimento e alimentação, o que parece ser uma característica de ambientes de águas rasas e de margens de estuários (Pessanha et al, 2000;Santos et al, 2002;Gomes et al, 2003;Godefroid et al, 2004;.…”

“…Overall, the following trends were observed: the dissipative beaches were found to harbor the most diverse assemblage of fishes, while the reflective beach harbored the lowest densities of fishes. assemblage structure, with typical of surf zones supporting high numbers of fish species, such as Trachinotus (T. carolinus and T. goodei) (Gomes et al, 2003;McLachlan & Brown, 2006), Menticirrhus [M. americanus (Linnaeus, 1758) and M. littoralis) (Layman, 2000;McLachlan & Brown, 2006) and Polydactylus (P. virginicus) (Gianinni & Paiva-Filho, 1995;McLachlan & Brown, 2006;Oliveira-Silva et al, 2008)]. These species can be considered to be residents of the surf zones of reflective beaches, as indicated by McLachlan & Brown (2006).…”

“…In Brazil, studies in this zone have been done mainly in the south and southeastern coast (CUNHA, 1981;PAIVA-FILHO;TOSCANO, 1987;MONTEIRO-NETO et al, 1990;MUSICK, 1994;PEREIRA, 1994;SAUL;CUNNINGHAM, 1995;GIANINNI;PAIVA-FILHO, 1995;LOPES et al, 1999;AZEVEDO, 2001;GOMES et al, 2003;GODEFROID et al, 1997GODEFROID et al, , 2004SPACH et al, 2004) generally related to spatial and temporal variations of the fish community structure, trophic ecology (TEIXEIRA et al, 1992;CHAVES;BOUCHEREAU, 2004), nictemeral variation (PESSANHA et al, 2003PESSANHA;ARAÚJO, 2003;BARREIROS et al, 2004) and wave exposure (GAELZER ; .…”
