RESUMO -A anemia falciforme é a doença hematológica e genética mais prevalente no Brasil. O índice de portadores heterozigotos (Hb AS) é significativo, sendo o cruzamento entre heterozigotos um risco de gerar novos homozigotos (Hb SS), o que acarreta sofrimento para os pacientes e grandes investimentos hospitalares. Estes fatos foram confirmados por dados obtidos de instituições públicas do Distrito Federal. Tratando esta anemia como caso de saúde pública, faz-se necessário o investimento em programas de triagem neonatal e de identificação de heterozigotos na população, pois esta patologia requer diagnóstico precoce para prevenir e controlar as manifestações clínicas, proporcionando melhor qualidade de vida aos portadores.Palavras-chave: anemia falciforme, hemoglobina S (Hb S), diagnóstico precoce, diagnóstico tardio, saúde pública.ABSTRACT -Sickle cell anemia is the most prevalent hematologic and genetic disease in Brazil. The significant hetorozygous level (Hb AS) increases the risk of new homozygous arise, what causes suffering in patients and great hospital investments. These facts had been confirmed by data collected from public institutions in Distrito Federal (Brasília/Brazil). This disease has to be treated as a public health case, with investments in newborn screening programs and populational heterozygous identification. The early diagnosis is very important to prevent and to control the clinical manifestations, providing a better quality of life to the patients.
