Diagnosis of infectious bronchitis: an overview of concepts and tools

Abstract: Infectious bronchitis (IB) casues multi-systemic infection in chickens with signs similar caused by other poultry pathogens and thus a high diagnostic accuracy can only be achieved by s series of laboratory assays. This article reviews in a brief way the traditional virus assays such as embryo innoculation, tracheal rings and virus neutralization assays for the direct detection of Avian infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) and methods based on gene molecular biology and some assays for the detection of anti-IBV a… Show more

“…Currently available serological tools for IBV include ELISA, virus neutralization assays and haemgglutination inhibition assays (De Wit 2000 ; Villarreal 2010 ; De Wit and Britton 2018 ). These assays may prove useful for the detection of closely related viruses, particularly DCoV, although extensive validation is required.…”

“…Trachea, lung, spleen, caecal tonsil, kidney and oviduct collected as pooled sample from impacted oviduct cases were subjected to haemagglutination (HA) test for detection of NDV [12,13] IBV [14] and EDS-76 virus [15]. Serum samples were collected randomly from ten birds of flocks affected with impacted oviduct and examined by haemagglutination inhibition (HI) test for the presence of antibodies to NDV, IBV and EDS-76 virus and by ELISA (Hester Pharmaceuticals Limited, India) for the (Mg) and (Ms).…”

“…Avian infectious bronchitis virus (IBV), the causative agent of avian infectious bronchitis (IB), is a Gammacoronavirus that replicates in lungs, tracheas, kidneys, guts, and reproductive tracts of breeders, broilers, and layers, leading to massive economic losses due to delayed growth, egg production drop, eggshell malformations, and infertility (3,8,13,24,27). Other respiratory pathogens, such as Newcastle disease virus (NDV) and Avian metapneumovirus (aMPV), can interact with IBV, increasing the severity and the course of the disease (20).…”
