“…Interestingly, some case reports suggest that amantadine can be useful for the treatment of sexual dysfunction that is induced by serotonergic antidepressants 80,81. A case series with three patients suggested that high-dose amantadine induced a switch to mania in bipolar patients,82 a side effect that has also been reported for several antidepressant drugs.…”

“…Treatment with amantadine for a short, two-week period of stabilizing improvement did not result in cycle acceleration, and discontinuation of the drug after such a period did not cause the recurrence of depressive symptoms. The reason for the short period of stabilization treatment with amantadine was to minimize the risk of manic switch reported in the Letter to the Editor by Sondré et al [ 45 ], in which amantadine was administered to 3 patients with BD-I. Although in the cases described in this report, patients received a high dose of 400 mg/day for 8 weeks, we thought that caution should be exercised in the duration of amantadine treatment after the improvement of depressive symptoms.…”

“…Careful monitoring is required when amantadine is administered concurrently with central nervous system stimulants. A switch to mania has been described in vulnerable bipolar patients (Sodre, Bucker, Zortea, Sulzbach-Vianna, & Gama, 2010;Rego & Giller, 1989).…”
