Objective: The aim of this study was to cross-culturally adapt the Internet Addiction Test (IAT) to the Portuguese language. Methods: The translation and evaluation process consisted of five steps: (1) translation; (2) back-translation; (3) peer review and evaluation of semantic equivalency by experts; (4) instrument evaluation through a sample of students, by evaluating their understanding level; and (5) analysis of the instrument's internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha-coefficient). Results: The instrument was translated and adapted to Portuguese. As shown, the Portuguese version of the IAT was easily understood and the internal consistency value was 0.85. Discussion: The translated and adapted IAT displays a satisfactory internal consistency. ResumoO objetivo deste estudo foi identifi car de que forma se estabelece a aliança terapêutica (AT) em pacientes encaminhados de forma obrigatória para a psicoterapia, em comparação aos pacientes que buscam atendimento psicoterapêutico voluntariamente, verifi cando-se também as características das representações de objeto, mecanismos de defesa, percepção de coerção, e gravidade dos sintomas. Participaram da pesquisa 51 sujeitos, sendo 15 casos em psicoterapia obrigatória e 36 casos em tratamento voluntário. Ambos os grupos foram selecionados em uma instituição pública de saúde que oferece psicoterapia para funcionários públicos municipais. Os resultados apontaram que apesar dos pacientes obrigatórios apresentarem sintomas mais graves, foi possível o estabelecimento da AT. Além disso, o status de paciente obrigatório não infl uenciou o estabelecimento da AT e sim a percepção de coerção na procura de atendimento.Palavras-chave: aliança terapêutica; psicoterapia; psicologia. AbstractFactors associated with the formation of the therapeutic alliance in mandatory psychotherapy. Th e aim of this study was to identify how the therapeutic alliance (TA) is established in patients referred for mandatory psychotherapy compared to patients who seek psychotherapy voluntarily. It was also verifi ed o the characteristics of object representations, defense mechanisms; perception of coercion and severity of symptoms. Participants were 51 subjects, divided into a psychotherapy mandatory group (N = 15), which was compared with a group of patients in voluntary treatment (N = 36). Both groups were selected from a public health institution that provides psychotherapy for municipal employees, both voluntary and mandatory. Th e results showed that although mandatory patients showed more symptoms, it was possible to establish the TA. Moreover, the mandatory status did not infl uence the establishment of TA, but the perception of coercion when seeking treatment.Keywords: therapeutic alliance; psychotherapy; psychology. Background: Article extracted from the doctoral research entitled "Experiences of the infertility phenomenon by patients suffering from Turner syndrome and variants: a clinical-qualitative study" approved by the University of Campinas. Objectives: To understand the defenses employed by women suffering from TS and different ways of dealing with the disease. Method: Qualitative research with exploratory design, non-experimental. The instrument consisted of a semidirect psychological interview, involving 13 women, undergoing semestral medical follow-up at the Center for Integral Attention to Women's Health (CAISM), and whose sampling was determined by saturation. Data was interpreted using the psychodynamic approach along with an eclectic framework of theoretical references for discussion in the spirit of interdisciplinary approach. Results: These women displayed psychosocial conflicts such as difficulties in interpersonal relationships; feelings of resignation, anger, impotence, devaluation and depression symptoms. Defenses used were: repression, denial, annulment, fantasizing, adaptation and sublimation. Discussion: Women suffering from TS and variants must deal with the disease's organic and psychic implications that cause great suffering and often hinder a saner social insertion. In this case, the study's findings can guide ambulatory psychological support concomitantly to the routine clinical protocol.
