Daily activity patterns of Saanen goats in the semi-arid northeast of Brazil

Abstract: -The objective of the study was to characterize the daily feeding activity patterns of Saanen goats (Capra hircus) as a function of changes in climatic variables. The investigation was conducted in the municipality of Cruzeta, 300 km from the city of Natal, Brazil. Seventeen free-ranging female Saanen goats were selected for observation, wherein they were kept on a pasture with native vegetation and also received concentrated feed in a trough. Observational records of behavior on pasture were collected using f… Show more

“…Since the CS group is also under severe nutritional deficiency, they did not have sufficient energy to support the standing process for a long time. Similar finding was established in Saanen goats in the semi-arid northeast of Brazil (Paulo and Lopes, 2014). This shows the importance of optimum level of nutrition for adaptation in goat as sufficient energy levels are needed to support the behavioral responses which will help an animal to adapt to heat stress condition.…”

“…During the day, the ST was lower at 8:00 h than at 12:00 h and 16:00 h during summer (Marai et al 2000). The ST increased by 0.22 °C in animals per extra degree of ambient temperature exposure (Paulo and Lopes 2014). Similar result was also reported by Renaudeau et al (2007) in pig with 0.22 °C per degree of ambient temperature.…”

“…In mammal, skin is the important pathway for heat exchange between the body and the surrounding environment. The ST was measured in different parts of body (back, flank and forehead) using a skin surface thermocouple probe connected to a microprocessor-based handheld thermometer (Paulo and Lopes 2014). The ST of an animal varies based on the quantum of sun rays to which the different body parts are exposed.…”

“…These results have a direct relation with the natural behavior of goats, where the animals use more time if fed during the day, quickly ingesting the maximum amount of food (Paulo & Lopes, 2014) (Figure 1).…”
