Piata palisade grass deferred with two distinct initial heights: luminous environment and tillering dynamics

Abstract: The study was carried out between March 1st and July 1st, 2011, in order to evaluate the tillering pattern of the deferred Piata palisade grass (Brachiaria brizantha cv. Piata). Three sward heights were evaluated in the beginning of the period of deferment: lower (20 cm), medium (30 cm) and higher (40 cm). The experimental design was of completely randomized blocks with three replications. The Piata palisade grass deferred with low initial height presented lower leaf area index, lower light interception and hi… Show more

“…[25] observed that the amount of rain favored the appearance of new leaves, verified by increasing the density of Marandu. The average density found by [24] was 163.5 kg•cm −1 from January to early April. Mass of leaves, stems and dead material was similar (P > 0.05) between the cultivars, both pre-and postgrazing.…”

“…These authors observed differences in methods to detect seasonal variations in this variable and verified that the LAI measured at LICOR showed differences only between summer and other seasons. In Piata cultivar [24] obtained LAI values of 5.06 and 5.25, respectively in heights of 0.3 and 0.4 m in March.…”

“…However, recent studies on tropical forage grasses, aimed at understanding the adaptive mechanisms of plants used for forage production, have emphasised the importance of adopting management strategies as a way to modulate the growth of deferred pastures (SOUSA et al, 2013;TEIXEIRA et al, 2014). Thus, by identifying the most suitable time of starting the deferment period in a particular region, the variations in deferment period (SANTOS et al, 2009), the control of pasture height at the beginning of the deferment period (SOUSA et al, 2013) and the nitrogen fertilisation strategy (TEIXEIRA et al, 2014) can be used to define the amount of forage produced as well as the structure and nutritive value of the deferred pasture.…”
