Fermentation and aerobic stability of high-moisture corn silages inoculated with different levels of Lactobacillus buchneri

Abstract: -Fermentation and aerobic stability were evaluated in high-moisture corn (HMC) silage inoculated with different levels of Lactobacillus buchneri. The HMC composed of 654 g/kg dry matter (DM) was ensiled in quadruplicate laboratory silos (7 L) per treatment. L. buchneri 40788 was applied at 5 × 10 4 ; 1 × 10 5 ; 5 × 10 5 ; and 1 × 10 6 cfu/g to the ground corn. Silages with no additive were used as controls. After 140 d of ensiling, the silages were subjected to an aerobic stability evaluation for 12 days in wh… Show more

“…Normally, assays of aerobic stability for silage produced in tropical climates are carried out for five or more days (Pedroso et al, 2008;Basso et al, 2012;Rabelo et al, 2015). However, considering the situation of silage management in Brazilian dairy farms, 67.7% of dairy farmers remove the silage from the silo top in three or fewer days (Bernardes and Rêgo, 2014).…”

“…Man, Rogosa and Sharpe (MRS) agar was used to count LAB by pour plate, whereas potato dextrose agar (PDA) was used to count yeasts and moulds by spread plate. Both MRS and PDA plates were incubated at 28°C according to protocols used in previous studies carried out in our laboratory (Basso et al., ; Lara et al., ; Rabelo, Basso, et al., ). Lactic acid bacteria and yeasts were counted after 2 days, and moulds were counted after 5 days.…”

The effect of a silage inoculant on siage quality, aerobic stability, and meat production on farm scale. International Scholarly Research Network Veterinary Science, v. 12, p 1-6, 2012.…”
