Polymorphism of alpha s1-casein gene in a dairy goat herd in the southeastern region of Brazil

Abstract: -Three different regions of the alpha s1 -casein gene (CSN1S1) were investigated to determine the frequencies of major alleles for null, low, intermediate and high milk protein expression in a herd of dairy goats raised in the southeastern region of Brazil. Genomic DNA samples were obtained from leukocytes of 145 dairy goats and regions of interest in the gene were amplified through Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), then evaluated in both agarose (O and E allele) and polyacrylamide gels (F allele). For better c… Show more

“…These frequencies of allele C were close to those found in the French dairy goat population in 1989, which ranged from 1 to 2 % depending on the breed considered [ 29 ]. This is also consistent with studies on Mexican, Brazilian and American dairy goat breeds, for which no allele C was detected [ 40 42 ]. The frequencies of alleles F and O in a population of highly selected animals (progeny-tested males and dams of bucks) were lower than those reported in females born before 1989, i.e.…”

“…Different from our results, on predominance of the intermediateexpressing(E) and weak-expressing (F) alleles, reported Maga et al (2009) for America dairy goats (Alpine, Saanen, Togenburg, Oberhasli), and Soares et al (2009) for Saanen and Alpina breeds reared in Brazil, as well as several earlier studies on dairy goat breeds in France and Italy (Grosclaude and Martin, 1997;Martin 1993).…”

“…Othman et al (2013) observed the prevalence of TT genotype in Egyptian sheep breeds by employing PCR-SSCP method. Polymorphic sites have also been identified in many breeds of goats such as Italian goat Garganica, Spanish breeds and Chinese goat breeds (Ramunno et al 1991;Soares et al 2009;Yue et al 2011).…”
