SUMMARY: Achatina fulica's secretion has been recently related to antibacterial, antifungal, and cicatricial properties, and it is influenced by the kind of food offered. Therefore, this study investigated the healing potential of dressing films based on mucous secretion of Achatina fulica. Thus, surgical wounds performed in black wistar rats were dressed with films based on collagen, and on mucous secretion of A. fulica fed with Lactuca sativa; undresses worked as wounds control. After 3, 7, 14 and 21 days the animals were euthanized, and the wounds were microscopically evaluated. On the 3rd and 7th days dressing films based on mucus provided acceleration of the formation maturation of granulation tissue, better epithelization rates, and more rapid replacement of type III for type I collagen fibers. On the 14th and 21st days, these dressings induced more intense deposition and better architectural disposition of type I collagen fibers, and hastened the regeneration of cutaneous phaneros. Dressings obtained from A. fulica fed with Lactuca sativa provided the most expressive results. This study suggests that films produced with mucous secretion of A. fulica can be successfully employed as wound dressing, particularly if snails are fed with Lactuca sativa.

Snails are highly unusual among multicellular animals in that they move on a layer of costly mucus, leaving behind a trail that can be followed and utilized for various purposes by themselves or by other animals. Here we review more than 40 years of experimental and theoretical research to try to understand the ecological and evolutionary rationales for trail-following in gastropods. Data from over 30 genera are currently available, representing a broad taxonomic range living in both aquatic and terrestrial environments. The emerging picture is that the production of mucus trails, which initially was an adaptation to facilitate locomotion and/or habitat extension, has evolved to facilitate a multitude of additional functions. Trail-following supports homing behaviours, and provides simple mechanisms for self-organisation in groups of snails, promoting aggregation and thus relieving desiccation and predation pressures. In gastropods that copulate, trail-following is an important component in mate-searching, either as an alternative, or in addition to the release of water- or air-borne pheromones. In some species, this includes a capacity of males not only to identify trails of conspecifics but also to discriminate between trails laid by females and males. Notably, trail discrimination seems important as a pre-zygotic barrier to mating in some snail species. As production of a mucus trail is the most costly component of snail locomotion, it is also tempting to speculate that evolution has given rise to various ways to compensate for energy losses. Some snails, for example, increase energy intake by eating particles attached to the mucus of trails that they follow, whereas others save energy through reducing the production of their own mucus by moving over previously laid mucus trails. Trail-following to locate a prey item or a mate is also a way to save energy. While the rationale for trail-following in many cases appears clear, the basic mechanisms of trail discrimination, including the mechanisms by which many snails determine the polarity of the trail, are yet to be experimentally determined. Given the multiple functions of trail-following we propose that future studies should adopt an integrated approach, taking into account the possibility of the simultaneous occurrence of many selectively advantageous roles of trail-following behaviour in gastropods. We also believe that future opportunities to link phenotypic and genotypic traits will make possible a new generation of research projects in which gastropod trail-following, its multitude of functions and evolutionary trade-offs can be further elucidated.

Estudo da determinação da concentração inibitória mínima do muco de Achatina fulica sobre Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923

RESUMO-Algumas classes de agente naturais podem ser empregadas na substituição de agentes químicos nos alimentos, dentre estes, tem-se as bacteriocinas. Estas são formadas por um grupo heterogêneo de peptídeos ou proteínas sintetizadas ribossomicamente que apresentam ação antimicrobiana contra uma vasta gama de micro-organismos patogênicos. Objetivou-se com este estudo a extração de uma bacteriocina produzida e excretada para o meio de cultivo, por Lactobacillus sakei, assim como a determinação da sua concentração mínima inibitória (CMI), frente ao micro-organismo Staphylococcus aureus. Após a obtenção do composto e a sua extração do meio de cultivo fermentado, diluiu-se em água peptonada estéril o extrato em um gradiente de concentrações de 1:2 até 1:12, assim todas as diluições e o extrato bruto foram testados pelo método de análise antimicrobiana em microplacas, contra o micro-organismo de interesse. A partir da análise dos resultados foi possível observar que o extrato apresenta uma ação bactericida no extrato bruto e na diluição de 1:2, a concentração mínima inibitória do composto foi encontrada na diluição de 1:9, na qual ainda apresente inibição do crescimento microbiano. Observa-se a produção de uma bacteriocina pelo Lactobacillus sakei assim como a extração deste composto do meio fermentado e sua ação antimicrobiana eficiente contra o micro-organismo Staphylococcus aureus. INTRODUÇÃO Vários agentes químicos ou sintéticos utilizados para inibição de micro-organismo em alimentos, estão sendo substituídos por agentes naturais. Estes com a mesma ação dos antimicrobianos químicos e sintéticos, todos com a finalidade de matar ou inibir o crescimento de micro-organismos indesejáveis no alimento (OLIVEIRA, et al., 2009). A concentração mínima de um agente antimicrobiano pode ser determinada como sendo a menor quantidade deste composto que será necessária para inibir o crescimento de um micro-organismo escolhido, esta quantidade pode ser denominada como concentração mínima inibitória (CMI). São feitos testes com variação da concentração do agente antimicrobiano, quando esta concentração for a menor possível e ainda apresentar inibição do crescimento do contaminante, essa é definida como CMI (OLIVEIRA, et al., 2009).
