-An experiment was conducted to define a protocol to determine metabolizable nutrient and energy values of diets. The metabolizability (M) was calculated of the dry matter (DM); crude protein (CP); gross energy (GE) and AME n of a single diet. Eighty-one 21-day old (d) male birds were used. The tested methodologies were: Cr 2 O 3 (0.5%) as an indicator (partial collection) or Fe 2 O 3 (1%) as a marker; fasting (0, 4, 6 and 8 h) prior to excreta collection and at the end of the feeding period on the last day of collection (total collection). The excreta collection periods were also tested (3 and 5 days).Twenty 31-day old male broilers from the same group of birds were used to assess the effect of fasting on digestive organ weight. At the end of fasting the digestive organs were removed and weighed. Metabolism coefficients and energy were not different between 3 and 5 days of total collection. CPM was lower for marker utilization and 3 days excreta collection compared to the total collection. Eight hours fasting resulted in significantly lower CPM compared to the other periods or the no fasting. With the methodology of partial collection with 5 days of collection, the lowest values were observed for all the responses, compared to the 3 day collection period. The use of the total collection methodology produced the highest DMM and CPM compared to partial collection. No influence of fasting was observed on the digestive organ sizes, indicating that until 8 hours of fasting no changes were observed in either relative or absolute organ weight. However, the relative jejunum weight of birds submitted to 4 hours fasting was higher than that of birds under no fasting. Total collection, during a 3 day period, without fasting and marker use, is the best methodology for ingredient and feed evaluation of growing birds.Key Words: chromic oxide, excreta collection, fasting, ferric oxide, metabolizable energy organ size Estudo de variações metodológicas na determinação do metabolismo aparente de nutrientes em frangos de corte RESUMO -Realizou-se um ensaio com frangos de corte para a definição de um protocolo de determinação da metabolizabilidade dos nutrientes e da energia da dieta. Foram estimados os coeficientes de metabolizabilidade de matéria seca (MS), proteína bruta (PB), energia bruta (EB) e a energia metabolizável aparente corrigida para nitrogênio (EMA n )de uma mesma dieta, utilizando-se 81 aves, de 21 dias de idade. As metodologias testadas foram as seguintes: utilização de 0,5% de Cr 2 O 3 como indicador (coleta parcial) ou 1% de Fe 2 O 3 como marcador e aplicação ou não de jejum (0, 4, 6 e 8 horas)pré-início de coleta e após a última refeição, no último dia de coleta (coletas totais). Períodos de coleta de três ou cinco dias também foram testados. Foram realizados três experimentos, para determinar o valor energético e nutricional do resíduo da produção de etanol a partir da batata-doce (RBD) e a sua utilização em dietas para frangos de crescimento lento. No primeiro experimento foi realizado um ensaio metabólico a fim de determinar a energia metabolizável aparente (EMA) e a corrigida para o balanço de nitrogênio (EMAn), bem como os coeficientes de metabolizabilidade aparente do resíduo, utilizando o método de coleta total de excretas, num delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com dois tratamentos: ração referência e ração teste (70% ração referência + 30% de inclusão do resíduo da batata-doce), quatro repetições e dez frangos de crescimento lento por unidade experimental. O RBD apresentou: 24,64% de proteína bruta, 2732kcal/kg e 2547kcal/kg EMA e EMAn na matéria natural. Os demais experimentos foram realizados para avaliar níveis de inclusão (0%, 6%, 12% e 18%) do RBD em dietas de aves de crescimento lento, em um delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com quatro tratamentos e cinco repetições e 10 aves por unidade experimental, avaliando o desempenho e metabolismo das rações. Os níveis de inclusão não afetaram o consumo de ração, mas houve redução no ganho de peso (GP) e piora na conversão alimentar (CA). Os coeficientes de metabolizabilidade do nitrogênio e matéria mineral apresentaram efeito quadrático com pontos máximos de 6,38% e 5,17% respectivamente. O RBD pode ser incluído nas rações de aves de crescimento lento até o nível de 1,041%.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of exogenous emulsifier and lipase in diets on performance, digestibility, and organ biometry of broiler chickens. A completely randomised design with seven treatments and seven replications was adopted. The treatments were as follows: T1 (positive control; PC): 3000, 3100, 3200, and 3250 Kcal of metabolisable energy (ME) kg-1 of diet for phases 1 to 10, 11 to 21, 22 to 31, and 32 to 37 days, respectively; T2: PC with reduction in ME of 30 Kcal kg-1 of diet; T3: PC with reduction in ME of 60 Kcal kg-1 of feed; T4 (negative control; NC): PC with reduction in ME of 90 Kcal kg-1 of feed; T5: NC with inclusion of exogenous lipase (10 000 U kg-1); T6: NC with inclusion of emulsifier (250 g t-1); and T7: NC with inclusion of lipase (10 000 U kg-1) and emulsifier (250 g t-1) in the period from 1 to 37 days of rearing. Performance characteristics (weight gain (WG), feed intake (FI), and feed conversion (FC)), carcass yield, cut yield, the relative weight of abdominal fat and organs (small intestine, liver, and pancreas), and relative intestinal length, in addition to dry matter digestibility (CDADM), ethereal extract (CDAEE), crude metabolisable energy (CMACE), and apparent metabolisable energy (AME) of the diets, were evaluated. In the initial phase, the CDAEE was higher for the PC group than for the emulsifier + lipase group. The AME determined in the final phase for the group supplemented with an emulsifier was higher by approximately 50 Kcal (EM) than the NC group. The WG of the lipase group was similar to that of the PC group. However, the groups with emulsifier and emulsifier + lipase showed a lower WG than the PC group. The additives used did not recover the FC to the same level observed in the PC group. The reduction in ME of 90 Kcal kg-1 generated a lower WG and worse FC. The use of both an emulsifier and lipase together produced results like to the PC group. The biometrics of the organs and the carcass yield and cuts were not influenced by diets. Thus, it can be concluded that the inclusion of lipase and an emulsifier improves the performance of broilers given diets with reduced energy, although it does not improve the lipid utilisation of the diets.
