The objective of this study was to evaluate in vitro nutrient disappearance and in vivo nutrient digestibility of cattle diets containing 70 or 30% roughage, with and without glycerin supplementation. Four Nellore cattle were used in the study based on a 4 × 4 Latin Square design in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement. Inclusion of glycerin and roughage proportion did not affect the nutrient disappearance of each ingredient (P > 0.05). Regardless of the inclusion of glycerin, a reduction in the proportion of roughage led to an increase (P < 0.05) in DMDis (64 vs. 72%), NDFDis (41 vs. 54%), and ADFDis (31 vs. 44%) of the total rations. Inclusion of glycerin resulted in an increase (P < 0.05) in DMD (70 vs. 62%) and a reduction (P < 0.05) in CPD (32 vs. 38%) and STD (82 vs. 74%). The diet containing 30% roughage led to higher (P < 0.05) DMD (67 vs. 65%) and CPD (35 vs. 33%) in comparison with the 70% roughage diet, but did not differ (P > 0.05) in STD (78%). Inclusion of glycerin at 20% of the total DM increased the utilisation of dietary DM without affecting the fibrous fraction of the diet. Glycerin supplementation in diets containing 70% roughage improves neutral detergent fibre digestibility. Key words: INDF. Glycerol. Ingredients. In vitro. In vivo. Total ration. ResumoO objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o desaparecimento in vitro de nutrientes e a digestibilidade in vivo de alimentos para bovinos contendo 70 ou 30% de forragem, com e sem suplementação de glicerina. Foram utilizados quatro bovinos Nelore num delineamento quadrado latino 4 × 4 em um esquema fatorial 2 × 2. A inclusão de glicerina e forragem não afetou o desaparecimento de nutrientes dos ingredientes (P > 0,05). Independentemente da inclusão de glicerina, uma redução na proporção de forragem provocou um aumento (P < 0,05) na DesMS (64 vs. 72%), DesFDN (41 versus 54%) e DesFDA (31 vs. 44%) das rações totais. A inclusão de glicerina resultou em um aumento (P < 0,05) na DMS (70 contra 62%) e uma redução (P < 0,05) na DPB (32 vs. 38%) e DAM (82 versus 74%). A dieta contendo 30% de forragem proporcionou maior (P < 0,05) DMS (67 vs. 65%) e DPB (35 versus 33%) em comparação à 1 Drs. em Zootecnia, Universidade Estadual Paulista, FCAV, Jaboticabal, SP, Brasil.

A conversão alimentar obtida para os machos (5,61 kg) pode ser considerada excelente se comparada aos resultados descritos por diferentes autores que trabalharam com altos níveis de concentrado (Resende et al, 2001;Gesualdi Jr. et al, 2000). CEP :15025-990 São José do Rio Preto -SP.RESUMO -Avaliaram-se os desempenhos produtivo e econômico de bovinos de corte submetidos a dietas para terminação em confinamento. Foram utilizados 28 bovinos jovens da raça Santa Gertrudis, 14 machos não-castrados e 14 fêmeas, distribuídos em um delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado, em baias individuais. A alimentação foi fornecida de acordo com as exigências para ganho de peso em terminação. As variáveis estudadas foram afetadas pelo sexo. O ganho de peso médio diário foi de 1,80 e 1,22 kg/animal/dia; a conversão alimentar, de 5,61 e 7,18 kg MS/kg de ganho de peso; o rendimento de carcaça, de 55,61 e 52,75%; e a ingestão de MS, de 10,08 e 8,87 kg MS/dia, respectivamente, para machos e fêmeas. A avaliação das carcaças indicou melhor rendimento para os machos, mas as fêmeas foram superiores quanto à porcentagem de traseiro especial e de seus principais cortes comerciais. Na avaliação econômica, o custo com alimentação para produzir uma arroba de carcaça foi de R$ 33,95 para os machos e R$ 37,02 para as fêmeas.Palavras-chave: composição da carcaça, concentrado, ganho de peso, garrotes, novilhas Meat production in feedlot Santa Gertrudis young bulls and heifers fed finishing dietsABSTRACT -Economic and animal performance of feedlot beef young bulls and heifers fed finishing diets were evaluated in this trial. Twenty-eight Santa Gertrudis bovines (14 young bulls and 14 heifers) were assigned to a completely randomized design and maintained in individual pens. Diets were formulated to fulfill the weight gain requirements of finishing animals. The measured variables were affected by sex. Daily weight gain (DWG), feed conversion, carcass yield, and dry matter (DM) intake were: 1.80 and 1.22 kg/day, 5.61 and 7.18 kg DM/kg DWG, 55.61 and 52.75%, and 10.08 and 8.87 kg/day, respectively, for young bulls and heifers. Males had greater carcass yield but females showed higher proportion of beef round as well as the main commercial cuts. RESUMO -Objetivou-se avaliar o desempenho, a digestibilidade aparente total; a eficiência síntese microbiana e o balanço de nitrogênio (BN) de novilhas de corte em confinamento alimentadas com dietas à base de cana-de-açúcar tratada ou não com óxido de cálcio (CaO, 1%) e diversos níveis de concentrado (NC). Utilizaram-se 24 animais, com 177,0 kg PC médio inicial e 8-12 meses de idade, distribuídos em delineamento inteiramente casualizado em esquema fatorial 2 × 3, cana-de-açúcar in natura e cana-de-açúcar tratada ou não com 1,0% CaO e três NC (0,0; 0,5 e 1,0% PC). Não houve interação volumoso × Sugarcane treated with calcium oxide and different concentrate levels for feedlot beef heifersABSTRACT -This research was carried out to evaluate the performance, total apparent digestibility, efficiency of microbial synthesis, nitrogen balance (NB) of crossbreed Holstein × Zebu heifers fed sugarcane treated or not with calcium oxide (CaO -1.0%) and different concentrate levels (CL), in feedlot. A total of 24 animals with initial average 177.0 kg BW and 8-12 months old was allotted to a complete randomized design with a 2 × 3 factorial arrangement, sugarcane in nature and sugarcane treated or not with 1.0% CaO and three CL (0.0, 0.5 and 1.0% BW). No interaction between forage and CL for nutrients intake was observed. Except for NDF intake, diet based in sugarcane treated with CaO reduced the nutrients intake (kg/day and % BW). Only the NDF intake was unaffected by CL, the other nutrients showed a positive linearly behavior as CL increased. No effects of the treatment of sugarcane with CaO and interaction between forage and CL on nutrient digestibilities were observed, except for NDF that increased with the CL in the diets. The microbial N and N urea content in serum was smaller in animals that were fed sugarcane treated with CaO. The efficiency of microbial synthesis, with mean value of 12.10 gCPmic/100 g TDN, was unaffected by the sugarcane treated with CaO to and nor by CL. Sugarcane treated with CaO reduced the average daily gain, which increased with the CL. Sugarcane treated with 1.0% CaO, fed after 24 hours of storage, prejudice most of nutrient intakes and worse the animal performance, while the concentrate offer levels up to 1.0% BW improve animal performance.
