“…With recent advances in computer, internet and smartphone technologies, modalities for delivering evidence-based cessation treatment at the population level have expanded and have shown promise. For example, a Cochrane review by Whittaker et al 4 that pooled the results of five studies found that cessation interventions delivered through text messaging on mobile phones significantly increased 6-month quit rates compared with control conditions (average relative risk=1.71). Three of these studies were exclusively text messaging interventions, one included an Internet Quit Coach, and another used video messaging).…”

“…A meta-analysis of mobile phone-based interventions for smoking cessation suggests that coupling the mobile component with other intervention components can produce longer-term effects (Whittaker et al, 2009). In particular, a human-computer combination approach may be more effective than a computer alone in changing behavior in youth (Cunningham et al, 2012).…”

“…The emerging evidence on text message interventions also appears promising. Five randomised controlled trials (RCTs) have demonstrated the effectiveness of mobile phone text messaging to promote smoking cessation,26 27 and a number of small RCTs have shown improved outcomes related to weight loss,28 physical activity,29 asthma medication adherence,30 glycaemic control in diabetes,31 blood pressure (BP) lowering,32 liver transplantation33 and HIV treatment 34. Other studies looking at text messaging systems to improve adherence to lifestyle and medication recommendations for people with established coronary artery disease are ongoing 35 36…”
