Background: Anemia in children aged less than five years is a common medical problem worldwide. Iron deficiency anemia is the most prevalent anemia in infants and has been shown to be a public health problem. Many studies have been conducted on anemia among infants but the scope of the conducted studies was focused on the prevalence of anemia with less emphasis on the knowledge and parental practice of anemia and its treatment. Providing infants with iron supplements and simultaneously ensuring their compliance has shown an improvement in hemoglobin levels, along with a significant reduction in the prevalence of iron deficiency anemia (IDA). Objective:To explore the level of parental knowledge and practice towards iron syrup.Methods: A Cross-sectional study was carried out from 21 st June to 2 nd July, 2015 in ten Primary Health Care centers in Bahrain. During the study period, a phone survey was conducted using a self-constructed questionnaire. The response rate was 98%. Results:In this study, the prevalence of anemia in infants is 45%. 58.4% of parents did not give the offered iron for their infants or stopped it within the first week of use. Overall, around 70% of parents correctly answered half or more of the knowledge questions regarding iron syrup side effects but only 32.5% of parents correctly answered half or more of the questions regarding IDA complications. Conclusion:Anemia is prevalent among 9 months old infants with considerable gaps in knowledge and practices of parents.

| Objective:This study aimed to evaluate the effect of ferrous sulfate (FS) on demineralized and nondemineralized human deciduous teeth. Additionally, it was evaluated the penetration extent of FS and its remineralizing effect on the enamel of deciduous teeth using Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM). Method: The sample comprised 44 human deciduous teeth. The 44 crowns were divided randomly into four groups: group A (FS after demineralization), group B (FS without demineralization), group C (only demineralization), and group D (control group). FS at 0.45 mol/L -1 was used daily (15 days) and demineralization was done by pH cycling (7 days). Then, three longitudinal slices of the crowns were photographed using PLM. The degree of penetration of the lesion or stain was measured in micrometers, as well as the distance between the external enamel surface and the core of lesion. Results: Group A showed a dark stain on the outer surface of enamel larger than the group B. It is suggested, a remineralizing effect when comparing groups, A and C. The mean depth and standard deviation for groups A, B, and C were 4.27 µm (±1.49), 3.72 µm (±1.68) and 5.00 µm (±1.84), respectively. No dark stains were observed in group D. Conclusion: FS stained the demineralized and non-demineralized human deciduous teeth. However, dark stains in the non-demineralized teeth were smaller or absent, than in the demineralized teeth. Therefore, FS may have a protective effect against demineralization.Keywords: Ferrous sulfate, iron deficiency, dental caries, deciduous teeth. RESUMO | Objetivo:Este estudo objetivou avaliar o efeito do sulfato ferroso (SF) em dentes decíduos humanos desmineralizados e não desmineralizados. Além disso, avaliou-se a extensão da penetração do SF e seu efeito remineralizante no esmalte de dentes decíduos usando microscopia de luz polarizada (MLP). Método: A amostra foi formada por 44 dentes decíduos humanos. As 44 coroas foram divididas aleatoriamente em quatro grupos: A (SF após desmineralização), B (SF sem desmineralização), C (apenas desmineralização) e D (grupo controle). O SF a 0,45 mol/L -1 foi utilizado diariamente (15 dias) e a desmineralização foi feita por ciclagem de pH (7 dias). Em seguida, três fatias longitudinais das coroas foram fotografadas usando MLP. O grau de penetração da lesão ou mancha foi medido em micrômetros, bem como a distância entre a superfície externa do esmalte e o núcleo da lesão. Resultados: O grupo A mostrou uma mancha escurecida na superfície externa do esmalte maior do que o grupo B. Sugere-se, um efeito remineralizante na comparação dos grupos, A e C. Material and Method: Two groups of infants born healthy, breastfed exclusively for the first six months and given 400 IU vitamin D were included in the study. In the fourth month of their life, infants started to take iron (Fe +2) 1 mg/kg/day and the second group 2 mg/kg/48 h In use of daily 1 mg/kg/day dose as of the fourth month till the first year 75 patients (the first group), in use of 2 mg/kg/48 h 80 patients (the second group) were involved in our study group. 34 infants (the third group) who did not start to take iron prophylaxis or use any was taken in our study as a control group. Results: It was found out that in the first group 14 infants (18.6%) developed iron deficiency (ID), 3 infants (4%) iron deficiency anemia (IDA), in the second group 16 infants (20%) developed ID and 4 infants (5%) IDA, in the third group, namely in the control group 12 infants (35,3%) developed ID and 10 infants (29.4%) IDA. In comparison of the control group with the first and second groups, IDA portion was less in iron prophylaxis groups, this value was found statistically reliable (p=0.001). When the first and second groups were compared with one another, a statistical difference could not be found between ID/IDA proportions. Because ID and IDA were encountered in both prophylaxis groups it was assumed that iron prophylaxis given just during the first year of life should also be given afterwards. Conclusions:There is no statistical difference between the first and second prophylaxis groups, thus, it was considered that instead of daily use, taking iron every other day would be more effective when it was given in a proper dose.
