Protein expression of c-erbB-2 and p53 in normal ducts, ductal carcinoma in situ and invasive carcinoma of the same breast

Abstract: The invasiveness of ductal carcinoma in situ seems to be independent of the Her-2/neu and TP53 genes. The general features of an occurrence of breast carcinoma are formulated at the outset of carcinogenesis, and the Her-2/neu and TP53 genes are involved.

“…The rate of ER positivity in DCIS is also reported to be higher than that in IDC (55%-74% [5,[12][13][14]). HER2 overexpression is generally observed in tumors that are comedo type [2-4, 9, 11], high grade [3,5,6,9,11,12,15], or ER negative [12,15]. The same tendencies were observed in the present study (Table 2).…”

“…Contrary to assumption (2), Latta et al [8] and Steinman et al [23] showed that the HER2 status of IDC and coexisting DCIS was similar, and they believed that HER2 status could not change during the process from DCIS to IDC. There are relatively many opinions that sympathize with this view [3,4,6,7]. We compared DCIS and coexisting IDC in pT1micþpT1a and found that the correspondence rate of HER2 expression was about 70%.…”

“…To this end, especially p53 and cyclin D1 seem to be useful. Previous breast cancer studies reported p53 accumulation in about 30% to 50% of primary tumors [13], as opposed to 0% to 2% in benign breast epithelium [14,15], with a high grade of concordance between the primary tumor and the corresponding lymph node metastases [16][17][18]. In addition, accumulation of p53 is a potent marker for tumor aggressiveness, therapy resistance, and short-term overall survival [19].…”
