AIM:To integrate results from different studies in examining the effectiveness of music in reducing the procedure time and the amount of sedation used during colonoscopic procedure. METHODS: An electronic search in various databases was performed to identify related articles. Study quality was evaluated by the Jadad's scale. The random effect model was used to pool the effect from individual trials and the Cohen Q-statistic was used to determine heterogeneity. Egger's regression was used to detect publication bias. RESULTS: Eight studies with 722 subjects were included in this meta-analysis. The combined mean difference for the time taken for the colonoscopy procedure between the music and control groups was -2.84 with 95% CI (-5.61 to -0.08), implying a short time for the music group. The combined mean difference for the use of sedation was -0.46 with 95%CI (-0.91 to -0.01), showing a significant reduction in the use of sedation in the music group. Heterogeneity was observed in both analyses but no publication bias was detected. CONCLUSION: Listening to music is effective in reducing procedure time and amount of sedation during colonoscopy and should be promoted.

O número de casos de câncer tem aumentado de maneira considerável em todo o mundo, principalmente a partir do século passado, configurando-se, na atualidade, como um dos mais importantes problemas de saúde pública mundial. A freqüência de distribuição dos diferentes tipos de câncer apresenta-se variável em função das características de cada região, o que enfatiza a necessidade do estudo das variações geográficas nos padrões desta doença, para seu adequado monitoramento e controle. Por meio de revisão da literatura especializada mais recente, foram descritos alguns dos principais tipos de câncer no Brasil, com enfoque nas pesquisas epidemiológicas que investigaram os fatores associados ao risco de adoecer por estes cânceres em nosso país. Desta forma, os autores deste estudo objetivaram contribuir para a avaliação do risco atual de câncer no Brasil, buscando uma análise das tendências em sua incidência, estratégia de fundamental valor para o desenvolvimento de políticas de saúde adequadas que visem ao controle desta doença em nosso país.

Music has long been regarded to aid health and loss-adaptation, but effect of music intervention on cancer patients is not well-understood. The aims of this study are to summarize and describe the role of music before and after diagnosis. This review examines music intervention studies with randomized designs for patients with cancer published between 1991 and 2015 from three Englishlanguage databases and Chinese-language databases. Ten studies that met specific inclusion criteria were reviewed. Our review indicates that music intervention may have beneficial effects on emotion (anxiety/depression) in patients with cancer. More research is needed to ascertain the most optimal intervention methodology on which cancer populations or which treatment modalities are appropriate for such an intervention.2. Non-peer reviewed literature was excluded. Search strategyThe PICOS strategy, namely Population (P), Intervention (I), Comparison (C), Outcome (O) and Study design (S), was applied for a systematic search of the published articles. In our study, we established P (population) for cancer patients; I (intervention) for music-based intervention; C for comparison of music intervention with another type of intervention or untreated group; O for management of emotion changes and disease progress; S for exception of cross-sectional studies and surveys studies [13,14].
