Show more

“…Our study showed the importance of studying risk factors for developmental stuttering in Brazil. 8,27,28 The present study on the risk factors for persistent developmental stuttering forms an important part of the process of diagnosing fluency disorders. These data, together with fluency assessment data will lead to precise diagnosis and support for the therapeutic process.…”

“…4,5 Therefore, early diagnosis and intervention are important and, for this reason, the risk factors for persistent developmental stuttering need to be investigated. [6][7][8] A wide range of possible risk factors has been proposed in the literature, including age; gender; type and manner of onset; duration of the disfluency; type of disfluency; associated communicative and qualitative factors; physical and emotional stress; family history of stuttering; personal, familial and social reaction; and family attitudes. 9 Gender is an important risk factor for stuttering, given that stuttering is more prevalent among males.…”

“…Currently there is a tendency to delineate possible subtypes of stuttering (18,28,29) . In this direction, this research that characterized the risk factors in a group of disfluent children with familial recurrence of the stuttering, presents relevant data that may help to understand the different subtypes of stuttering.…”

“…Besides knowing about what are the risk factors that should be investigated, the professional must understand that these factors interact with each other, and should not be analyzed separately. A comparative study of the risk factors in a group of children with familial and sporadic developmental stuttering was performed and the results suggest that the risk factors studied in two groups of children who stutter are similar, independent of family history (29) . The only significant difference between the groups was in relation to emotional stress that happened close to the onset of disfluency, that occurred more frequently in the group of sporadic developmental stuttering (29) .…”
