Effects of acid treatment on the clay palygorskite: XRD, surface area, morphological and chemical composition

Abstract: The palygorskite is an aluminum-magnesium silicate that has a fibrous morphology. Their physicochemical characteristics are the result of high surface area, porosity and thermal resistance which make it an attractive adsorbent. Its adsorption capacity can be increased through chemical reactions and/or heat treatments. The objective of this work is to verify the effects of acid activation on the palygorskite, treated with HCl at 90 °C at concentrations of 2, 4 and 6 mol L -1 in 2 and 4 hours, with clay/acid sol… Show more

“…However, some of the metallic oxides were reduced by HCl treatment, metallic oxides decreased by acid treatment include; Fe2O3, Al2O3, MnO, K2O, MgO and CaO. These results are similar to one found by Xavier et al, [8] while investigating the effect of acid treatment on clay palygorskite clay obtained from Guadalupe [8].…”

“…The results of acid treatment indicate that the chemical composition of the clays changed substantially. As the concentration of the acid increased, there was a marked increase in the dissolution of all soluble cations [8]. The acid treatment causes a reduction in the composition of most elements with a higher reduction being achieved at a higher concentration as shown in Table 1 above.…”

“…The PALY showed characteristic peak at 2h = 8.4°w hich is associated with the crystallographic plane (110) according to JCPDS-ICCD card 00-031-0783 [22,23], and the basal spacing calculated was 10.4 Å . The XRD patterns of the samples PALY-CTAB (Fig.…”

“…Os valores de área superficial obtidos segundo método BETforam para a amostra AN 9,821 m²/g, para a amostra AM1 0,045 m²/g, para a amostra AM2 2,665 m²/g e para a amostra AM3 46,714 m²/g. O aumento da área superficial de argilas tratadas acidamente já foi observado em outros estudos e sugerese que esse aumento pode ser devido a eliminação dos cátions trocáveis do espaço interlamelar das argilas (Xavier et al, 2014).…”
