Modified cassava starches as potential corrosion inhibitors for sustainable development

Abstract: Activated (AS) and carboxymethylated (CMS 0.24 ) cassava starch derivatives were studied as corrosion inhibitors for carbon steel XC35 in a 200 mgL -1 NaCl solution. They were characterized by back titration and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). Electrochemical techniques were used to evaluate the inhibitive properties of starches at room temperature and the chemical composition of the protective films was determined by X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). Electrochemical measurements reveale… Show more

“…The peaks at roughly 286 and 532 eV are assigned to carbon and oxygen, respectively. Different binding energies of these C 1s and O 1s peaks are summarized in Table . For CS and MS, the C 1s signal showed four peaks at ∼284.8, 286.4, 287.2, and 288.9 eV corresponding to CC and/or CH, CO, OCO and/or CO and OCO, respectively.…”

“…33 The O1s core level spectrum in Figure 3c shows the presence of C-OH, O-H and C-O bonds at 533.36, 532.16 and 531.24 eV, respectively. 35 The N1s XPS spectrum presented in Figure 3d shows a C-N peak only in GO-BDMA-Pd at 399.47 eV contributed to the higher C1s intensity (68.15%) of the GO-BDMA-Pd on GO-BDMA (64.41%). 36 Figure 3e observed in the presence of 0.03 M HCHO.…”

“…This phenomenon signified that the corrosion inhibitor does not stop the corrosion activity but significantly retards the chemical reaction on the exposed surfaces. The inhibition reaction that occurred was due to a restriction mechanism towards active site of chemical reaction on the coupon's surface [24]. A maximum inhibition efficiency was achieved at 86.26 IE% with the addition of 1500 ppm GTS.…”

“…Moreover, at the fingerprint region of bands between 900 and 1500 cm −1 , bands at 997, 1077, 1149 and 1340 cm −1 were identified as -C-O-C-bonds in the anhydroglucose unit. The anhydroglucose unit is the most important chemical building block of polysaccharides of starch without containing water [24].…”
