Acid treatments of montmorillonite-rich clay for Fe removal using a factorial design method

Abstract: Montmorillonite clays are of great interest for industrial processes such as catalysis and adsorption. The textural properties of clays can be modified in an attempt to increase their uses. This paper describes the acid treatment of natural montmorillonite clay. The materials were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic absorption spectroscopy (AA) and BET surface area measurements. Three different acids (HCl, HNO 3 and H 2 SO 4 ) were tested, and HCl and H 2 SO 4 were more efficient for removing F… Show more

“…The occurrence of these reactions of decationating and dealumination is confirmed by changes in the chemical composition of natural aluminosilicate samples ( Moreover, due to changes of the chemical composition caused by acid treatment, serious variations of surface and structural characteristics of minerals have been observed [32,33], which also strongly depend on the acid solution concentration and duration of the treatment. At shorter acid leaching times, mainly Ion-exchange reactions take place along with a slight destruction of the layered structure.…”

“…To improve these properties, several trails were done including mechano-chemical activation [5] intercalate with some organic materials and thermo-chemical routs or chemical activation. Acid activation is the more familiar methods for modification of the kaolin materials which involves the leaching of the kaolin ore with the minerals acids [6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13]. Most of the acid treatment has indicated that the kaolin is more soluble in H 2 SO 4 than the other acids.…”
