Si-tricalcium phosphate cement: preparation, characterization and bioactivity in SBF

Abstract: There are evidences considering the effectiveness of Si on enhancing biological properties of calcium phosphates; however, there are not many works relating to the Si-alpha-TCP bone cement. The influence of silicon doping on the properties of α-TCP cement was analyzed. Si-TCP was obtained by a solid state reaction employing CaCO 3 , CaHPO 4 and CaSiO 3 and powder was analyzed by XRD, FTIR, XRF and BET specific area. Cement samples were analyzed for their surface of fracture morphology, mechanical resistance an… Show more

“…The lower content of β-TCP on Si-α-TCP confirms the efficiency of Silicon in stabilizing the α-TCP phase by lowering the β → α phase transformation temperature 4,5,22 once the powder doped with Silicon resulted on purer α-TCP (4 wt. (%) of β-TCP) at a lower sintering temperature work were sintered for longer times it would be expected a reduction on β-TCP content.…”

“…(1250 °C). Based on results reported on the literature [22][23][24] depending on the Magnesium content in the precursors employed the temperature at which pure α-TCP can be synthesized could be raised up to 1500 °C, however, if the material is sintered at the right temperature and for enough time to guarantee the total β → α conversion it is possible to obtain pure α-TCP no matter how high is the Mg contamination. Then, if the powders synthesized on this…”

“…Imaging of Surface Morphology and Apatite Formation: For imaging of surface morphology and apatite formation, cement samples were kept in either PBS or SBF at 37 °C for 24 h. [96] After 24 h, the aqueous media were removed and specimens were lyophilized. Lyophilized samples were sputter coated with platinum, and cross-sectional images of fractured surfaces were taken with a Philips-FEI XL30 SEM in secondary electron mode in 100x-100,000x magnification.…”
