Study of the adherence between polymer-modified mortars and porcelain stoneware tiles

Abstract: Despite the excellent characteristics of porcelain tiles, their application on building facades requires special attention, since this material differs from conventional ceramics and because facades are exposed to weathering that can damage ceramic revetments. The combination of polymer and silica fume to produce mortars results in excellent properties, which are ideal for repairs and revetments requiring high performance. Such improvements justify its study for the installation of porcelain tiles. This articl… Show more

“…In this study, the specific mortar grout for granite and marble that is marketed worldwide, here called "Commercial Mortar" was compared with other type, here called "Mortar 3" [6] based on a laboratory-prepared mortar for porcelanate [7]. The reason this was chosen is due to the fact that porcelanate and granite have one characteristic in common, very low porosity (< 3%), does not allow anchoring, and the adherence is related to chemical bonds and/or intermolecular forces.…”

“…According to Ohama (1997), Ollitrault-Fichet et al (1998), Chandra andFlodin (1987), and de Almeida and Sichieri (2005), the addition of latex increases impact resistance and also provides impermeability. Therefore, the mortars with these additives are suitable for laying plates and external wall covering.…”

“…Active silica improves the resistance of hydrated cement paste, and, according to Khayat and Aitcin (1992), Male (1989), Aitcin (2000) and de Almeida and Sichieri (2006), it has been the subject of much research. It is added as a powder and basically operates in two ways: as a ''filler'' or pozzolan.…”

“…The modernization of civil construction is a requirement of society and a demand of construction companies to guarantee financial survival, especially through productivity gains and cost reduction. In this sense, the implementation of technological innovations in traditional construction processes is very important (ALMEIDA, 2005;SABBATINI, 1994).…”
