Morphology and formation mechanism of hydroxyapatite whiskers from moderately acid solution

Abstract: Hydroxyapatite (HA) whiskers with uniform morphology and good crystallinity were successfully prepared by a precipitation-hydrolysis method in moderately acid solution at 85-95 °C for 48-120 h, their lengths were in the range of 50-150 mum and aspect ratios (length/diameter) in the range of 40-100. The precipitates formed at each stage of the synthesis were characterized by XRD, FTIR, TEM and SEM. The morphology and crystallinity of the precipitates depended on the synthesis temperature and time as well as the… Show more

“…These peaks are known as the stretching and bending modes of PO43 group present in NHA . At wavelength of ∼825 cm −1 presence of acidic phosphate group ( HPO42) were detected . Other peaks shown at ∼3446 cm −1 with high intensity and at ∼1636 cm −1 with low intensity corresponds to the stretching and bending modes of the hydroxyl group (OH − ) in the NHA .…”

“…XRD, FTIR and Raman spectra were used to study crystal polymorphs of the HAP-based catalysts, and the results are shown in Figure 2 HAP shows all absorption bands characteristic for HAP [29]. For PO 4 3group, the ν 1 vibration (symmetric stretching) occurred at 942 cm -1 , the ν 3 vibration (asymmetric stretching) centered at 1000 cm -1 and 1100 cm -1 , while ν 1 vibration (asymmetric bending) located at 563 cm -1 , 600 cm -1 , 942 and Pb-HAP samples (Figure 2(B)).…”

“…Following the molten salt approach, several authors have reported the synthesis of micro‐sized whiskers of HA doped with K + and millimeter‐sized carbonate apatite (with formula Ca 9.8 [(PO 4 ) 5.6 (CO 3 ) 0.4 ](CO 3 )) using CaCO 3 as flux, where the carbonates are allocated in both anionic channel and phosphate positions . Using the hydrothermal route several authors have obtained micrometer‐sized HA single crystals with needle, platelet, flake or whisker morphologies . Some hydrothermal and combined procedures to obtain millimeter‐sized apatite single crystals have been reported.…”

“…21 Using the hydrothermal route several authors have obtained micrometer-sized HA single crystals with needle, platelet, flake or whisker morphologies. [22][23][24][25] Some hydrothermal and combined procedures to obtain millimeter-sized apatite single crystals have been reported. Ito et al obtained carbonatecontaining HA single crystals with 4 mm in length by CaH-PO 4 hydrolysis.…”
