Correlation between Corrosion Potential and Pitting Potential for AISI 304L Austenitic Stainless Steel in 3.5% NaCl Aqueous Solution

Abstract: We investigated the effect of surface finish of two AISI 304L (UNS S30403) stainless steels on the corrosion potential (Ecorr) in 3.5% NaCl aqueous solution and its value was compared with the pitting potential (Ep) value and the type of anodic potentiodynamic curve obtained for determination of E p in this solution. Five different surface finishes were examined. E corr and its standard deviation are strongly affected by the type of surface finish. Moreover, there are evidences of a linear correlation between … Show more

“…The OCP curve of the unaged sample resembles that of an as‐solution‐treated 304L austenitic stainless steel in 3.5% NaCl studied by Alonso‐Falleiros and Wolynec . According to these authors, the initial drop of the OCP curve should be associated with reductive dissolution of the oxide film formed in air, while the gradual OCP increase has to do with the growth of a new film formed in 3.5% NaCl.…”

“…Some studies focused on the comparison of these methods by considering surface conditions and pitting potential measurement as well as evaluation of the effect of alloying elements on the pitting susceptibility of stainless steels . Potentiodynamic test is used not only for the evaluation of different parameters affecting localized corrosion, but also assessment of breakdown potential distribution of stainless steels …”

“…[21][22][23][24][25][26][27] Some studies focused on the comparison of these methods by considering surface conditions [28] and pitting potential measurement [22] as well as evaluation of the effect of alloying elements on the pitting susceptibility of stainless steels. [8] Potentiodynamic test is used not only for the evaluation of different parameters affecting localized corrosion, [29][30][31][32][33] but also assessment of breakdown potential distribution of stainless steels. [17] In this work, both techniques are used to characterize localized corrosion of stainless steel grade AISI 304L in solution with different chloride concentration in order to compare the two methods in terms of reliability to determine breakdown and repassivation potentials.…”
