Antimicrobial activity of the essential oil of Cymbopogon citratus (DC) Stapf. on Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus mutans and Candida spp.

Abstract: Medicinal plants with fungicide action, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects are under investigation. The main purpose of this work was to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of the essential oil from Cymbopogon citratus (DC) Stapf. on strains of Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus mutans and Candida spp. with planktonic and biofilm growth. To study the micro-organisms in planktonic cells, the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimal bactericidal concentration (MBC) were determined by using 9 c… Show more

“…14 A recent study 15 showed the antimicrobial activity of Cymbopogon citratus (Poaceae) extract on standard strains and clinical streptococci isolates. Additionally, previous studies 16,17,18 tested the activity of C. citratus essential oil on Streptococcus mutans monospecies biofilm. These studies pointed to the promising potential of this natural substance for application in anti-caries products.…”

“…Diversas publicações relataram atividade antimicrobiana das plantas aqui avaliadas 2,10,18,20 , entretanto, esse efeito é observado quando do uso na forma de óleos essenciais. Isso pode se dever ao fato de os principais fitoconstituintes serem voláteis, não sendo mantidas as concentrações quando as plantas são utilizadas em outras formulações 7 .…”

“…The essential oil extracted from the leaves presented microbicidal activity, microbicide on strains of Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus mutans and Candida spp. (Almeida et al 2013); anxiolytic and anticonvulsive effects in mice (Blanco et al 2009;; anti-inflammatory action in rats (in vivo); antifungal activity in Candida albicans strains (Silva et al 2008), C. tropicalis and Aspergillus niger (in vitro) (Boukhatem et al 2014), and antimalarial activity in mice (in vivo) (Tchoumbougnang et al 2005). Polyphenols from C. citratus reduced the production of lipopolysaccharide-induced cytokines (LPS) in human and rat macrophages (in vitro) (Francisco et al 2013).…”
