“…In addition, it also triggers placenta praevia, premature placental displacement and, also, crosses the transplacental barrier, causing problems to the fetus as restriction of fetal growth. “…12 This is relevant, especially when a case-control study carried out in the Santos basin, showed that areas contaminated with industrial waste had adverse pregnancy outcomes such as abortion and congenital malformation more prevalent than uncontaminated áreas. 12 Ribeirão Preto presents, as of 2012, an increase in its abortion rate. This period temporally coincides with the exponential growth of its agricultural plantation, as we can see in Tables 2 and 3.…”

“…6,7 Thus, environmental agents have the potential to cause damage to the developing embryo or fetus. 8 The passage through the placental barrier can lead to anomalous placentation, alteration of the trophoblast regulatory pathway and cell viability, 9 congenital malformations, 10 abortion, and fetal death 11,12 neurodevelopmental disorders 13 among others. In addition, a study carried out in Cambodia found a negative association between birth length and maternal levels of pesticides.…”
