“…Studies performed in several states have demonstrated frequencies ranging between 0.3% and 13%, including among pregnant women. 3,[23][24][25] Previous knowledge of the serological test results for hepatitis B in pregnant women is of extreme importance as the risks of congenital transmission increase with maternal viral load. This disease should receive constant attention in pregnant women, as infected newborn babies present a high risk of developing chronic forms of the disease due to their immunological immaturity.…”

“…However, it should be kept in mind that the simple implementation of a routine test is no guarantee of the quality of assistance given to neonates of HBsAg+ mothers, as it has been shown in a recent evaluation carried out in the city of Ribeirão Preto. This study detected inadequate care in 1/3 of the deliveries of mothers with chronic HBV infection 13 . No less important is the adoption of individual preventive measures for the health care providers in order to avoid the nosocomial transmission of B virus from patients, by means of proper preventive practices such as the use of gloves, the avoidance of recapping needles and the use of adequate containers for the disposal of piercing and cutting material.…”

“…We detected 26 carriers of HBsAg antigen, with a prevalence rate of 0.5%. Vertical transmission was not the main factor of transmission of hepatitis B in the community, although not ruled out its participation as an important factor perpetuating viral diseases (11) .…”

“…In the general population, the chances of an infection by HBV viruses to evolve to the chronic form in adults is 5-10%, while for the offspring of infected mothers, this risk is approximately 90% (11) .…”
