An in vivo study was conducted to assess the effects of the consumption of Astrocaryum aculeatum Amazon Meyer (tucumã) in the treatment of diet-induced dyslipidemia in sedentary and exercised Wistar rats. With an average weight of 350 grams, 40 male rats were divided into 4 subgroups of 10. The sedentary control group (SCG) was fed with commercial feed, while the sedentary treatment group (STG) was fed with a ration of tucumã. In addition to the sedentary groups, two exercise groups were formed. The Exercised control group (ECG) was fed with commercial food and the exercised treatment group (ETG) was fed with a ration of tucumã. Body weight gain and food intake were monitored during the experiment. Plasma was analyzed for cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL-C, LDL-C, VLDL, total protein, glucose, insulin, and leptin concentrations. Our results show that the ECG group tended to consume more food, while the groups that were fed with tucumã pulp (STG and ETG) presented a greater tendency to gain body mass. ECG group showed a tendency towards a higher concentration of cholesterol in plasma, while STG and ETG presented higher absolute values for triglycerides and VLDL. No hypolipiemic effect was observed related to tucuma ingestion.

A dieta de cafeteria foi desenvolvida a fim de mimetizar a dieta ocidentalizada, uma vez que esta associa-se a desordens no perfil cardiovascular, como dislipidemias, hiperglicemia, acúmulo de gordura corporal, entre outros. Os frutanos tipo inulina (FTI) são fibras solúveis categorizados como prebióticos. O presente estudo objetivou avaliar os efeitos da dieta de cafeteria associadas aos FTI sobre o perfil cardiometabólico em ratos Wistar. Para tanto, utilizou-se 30 animais. Os FTI purificados, bem como, provenientes da matriz alimentar (yacon em pó), foram adicionados a seus respectivos grupos experimentais na dose de 6%, durante 30 dias. As variáveis analisadas foram: composição centesimal e conteúdo de FTI, ganho de peso (GP), peso relativo do ceco (PRC), peso relativo do fígado (PRF), consumo alimentar, glicemia, triglicerídeos, colesterol total, HDL-c, LDL-c, tecido adiposo subcutâneo e visceral (epididimal, retroperitoneal e mesentérica). Todas as análises seguiram os protocolos padronizados. A análise estatística foi realizada no software Sigma Stat 4.0 e teste de normalidade de Shapiro-Wilk, testes descritivos, ANOVA ou teste de Kruskal-Wallis seguidos dos testes de comparação de médias de Duncan ou Dunn’s. O nível de significância adotado foi de p<0,05. A variável PRC foi estatisticamente maior nos grupos submetidos aos FTI. O grupo que recebeu dieta de cafeteria apresentou valores superiores no GP, VLDL, triglicerídeos, tecido adiposo subcutâneo e epididimal. Não houve diferença estatística nos parâmetros PRF, colesterol total, LDL-c, HDL-c e glicemia. Portanto, através deste trabalho, verificou-se efeitos sistêmicos benéficos dos FTI em parâmetros como: PRC, GP, VLDL, triglicerídeos, tecido adiposo.

Bioelectrical impedance analysis and anthropometry for the determination of body composition in rats: effects of high-fat and high-sucrose diets

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to determine the impedance of Wistar rats treated with high-fat and high-sucrose diets and correlate their biochemical and anthropometric parameters with chemical analysis of the carcass. METHODS: Twenty-four male Wistar rats were fed a standard (AIN-93), high-fat (50% fat) or high-sucrose (59% of sucrose) diet for 4 weeks. Abdominal and thoracic circumference and body length were measured. Bioelectrical impedance analysis was used to determine resistance and reactance. Final body composition was determined by chemical analysis. RESULTS: Higher fat intake led to a high percentage of liver fat and cholesterol and low total body water in the High-Fat group, but these changes in the biochemical profile were not reflected by the anthropometric measurements or bioelectrical impedance analysis variables. Anthropometric and bioelectrical impedance analysis changes were not observed in the High-Sucrose group. However, a positive association was found between body fat and three anthropometric variables: body mass index, Lee index and abdominal circumference. CONCLUSION: Bioelectrical impedance analysis did not prove to be sensitive for detecting changes in body composition, but body mass index, Lee index and abdominal circumference can be used for estimating the body composition of rats.
