The high incidence of chronic diseases in the elderly leads to increased intermittent drug therapies. The presence of concomitant diseases and prescriptions made out by various health professionals facilitate the practice of polypharmacy, the emergence of iatrogenic diseases, and therapeutic regimens that are inconvenient for patients. The present study was carried out among elderly patients hospitalized at the Hospital Care Foundation of Paraiba, Campina Grande, with the objectives of studying the consumption of drugs by these patients, noting the possible adverse drug reactions (ADR), drug interactions and the presence of high-risk drugs prescribed to this age group. The study had a descriptive and cross-sectional quantitative design and involved a sample of 65 patients accompanied by the Pharmacovigilance Centre of the hospital, from August 2009 to July 2010. Over 90% of the patients were on polypharmacy, and the possible ADR found were related to the gastrointestinal tract where the most frequent interactions were with cardiovascular drugs. Within the context of pharmacoepidemiology, pharmacists can contribute by improving the quality of life of patients and preventing unnecessary expense with erroneous and poorly evaluated treatments. Drug interactions.A elevada incidência de doenças crônicas na terceira idade induz ao aumento de terapias medicamentosas intermitentes. A presença de patologias concomitantes e prescrições elaboradas por diversos profissionais de saúde facilitam a prática da polifarmácia, surgimento de doenças iatrogênicas e esquemas terapêuticos pouco cômodos para o paciente. O estudo foi realizado junto aos pacientes idosos internados no Hospital da Fundação Assistencial da Paraíba (FAP), Campina Grande, com objetivo de estudar o consumo de medicamentos por estes pacientes, observando as possíveis reações adversas a medicamentos (RAM), interações medicamentosas apresentadas e a presença de medicamentos de alto risco prescritos para este grupo etário. A pesquisa foi descritiva e transversal, com abordagem quantitativa, constituída por uma amostra de 65 pacientes, acompanhados através do Centro de Farmacovigilância do hospital, no período de agosto de 2009 a julho de 2010. Mais de 90% dos pacientes estavam sob polifarmácia, as possíveis RAM encontradas estavam mais relacionadas ao trato gastrintestinal e as interações foram mais frequentes com os medicamentos de ação cardiovascular. Dentro do contexto da farmacoepidemiologia, o profissional farmacêutico pode contribuir para a melhoria da qualidade de vida dos pacientes e evitar gastos desnecessários devido à terapêuticas errôneas e mal avaliadas.Unitermos: Terceira Idade/uso de medicamentos. Objective: To evaluate central adiposity in elderly women in a gerontology-geriatric care unit of the Universidade Federal de Pernambuco (the Federal University of Pernambuco). Method: A cross-sectional study involving a sample of 182 elderly women, aged from 60 to 89 years, who received care from January to July 2011, was performed. The variables analyzed were the socio-economic and demographic conditions, lifestyle, waist circumference (WC) and body mass index (BMI) of the women, as well as the occurrence of hypertension, diabetes mellitus and high total cholesterol levels. Yates' chi-squared test and Fisher's exact test were applied. A significance rate of 5% was adopted for the rejection of the null hypothesis. Results: Of the elderly women surveyed 82.4% had a WC signifying a large waist size, 57.2% were over-weight, 78.3% presented hypercholesterolemia, 63.2% had hypertension and 23.6% had diabetes. 61.5% were aged between 60 and 69 years old; 56% received up to two minimum salaries; 63.5% had less than eight years of schooling, 74.7% stated that they did not smoke, 87.9% did not drink alcohol; and 51.4 had sedentary habits. An association was observed between BMI and central adiposity (CA) ( p=0.000). CA tended to be present around 1.2 times more frequently in elderly women with excess weight than among those who were not overweight. Conclusion: The high frequency of central adiposity and overweight indicates the susceptibility of this population to these factors. While no association with cardiovascular risk factors was observed, there is a clear need for monitoring by a multidisciplinary team, so as to identify and treat this debilitating condition, thereby contributing to the quality of life of this population.

ObjetivoAnalisar a prevalência de obesidade geral e central e fatores associados em idosos cadastrados na rede básica de saúde do município de Botucatu, São Paulo.MétodosEstudo transversal que avaliou 304 idosos sorteados por amostragem estratificada entre as unidades básicas de saúde do município. Realizaram-se avaliação antropométricae inquérito socioeconômico. Foram classificados como obesos os indivíduos com índice de massa corporal maior ou igual a 30kg/m2 e com circunferência da cintura maior ou igual a 88cm para mulheres e 102cm para homens. Foram feitos testes qui-quadrado e t Student e regressão logística múltipla. O nível de significância adotado foi de 5%. Os dados foram apresentados na forma descritiva e em tabelas, estratificados por sexo e grupo etário e com os resultados do modelo ajustado para a regressão logística. Resultados A prevalência de obesidade geral foi de 14,9% para os homens e de 31,7% para as mulheres; e a de obesidade central foi de 42,5% para os homens e de 73,5% para as mulheres. Após a regressão logística, as variáveis que se associaram positivamentee de forma significativa com a obesidade geral foram: sobrepeso dos pais e o consumo de bebida alcoólica. Observou-se relação inversa e significativa entre“viver sem companheiro” e a obesidade geral. Em relação à obesidade central, nenhuma das variáveis de interesse associou-se significativamente.ConclusãoO grupo de idosos analisado apresentou altas prevalências de obesidade, principalmente em mulheres, o que torna necessário o acompanhamento do estado nutricional e o conhecimento dos fatores associados à obesidade.Termos de indexação: Estado nutricional.
