Weight and height prediction of immobilized patients

Abstract: ObjectiveTo confirm the adequacy of the formula suggested in the literature and/or to develop appropriate equations for the Brazilian population of immobilized patients based on simple anthropometric measurements. MethodsHospitalized patients were submitted to anthropometry and methods to estimate weight and height of bedridden patients were developed by multiple linear regression. ResultsThree hundred sixty eight persons were evaluated at two hospital centers and five weight-pre-dicting and two height-predict… Show more

“…It is worth noticing that the height as estimated from the equation used in this study 14 was used to calculate the fat-free mass suggested by Rabito et al 22 . Those authors observed a coefficient of determination equal to 0.88 and considered this value between very good and excellent 28 , suggesting that it was a valid strategy to apply this formula to all subjects (including those that could stand up for measurement of height).…”

“…Height was estimated for all participants (Groups I and II) by the equation proposed in the literature for Brazilian data 22 Where S = sex (boys = 1; girls = 2); A = age (years) and HS = half span (cm, distance between the sternum and the distal phalange of the third finger, with the flexible steel tape parallel to the clavicle 23 ).…”

“…Although several equations have been developed which enable BW and height to be estimated from surrogate measures of body segments (e.g., knee height, arm and calf circumferences, skinfold thickness) in patients who are bedridden and unable to walk, 15,16) the mean differences between actual and estimated values using these surrogate measures are significant (p<0.001), with overestimation of actual BW in all formulas by 1.9-4.5 kg for males and −2.1-7.1 kg for females. 17) This calculation error is much larger than the error between actual BW and e-BW in the present study.…”

“…The individuals who were able to walk underwent anthropometric evaluation consisting of measurements of weight, height and BMI. The patients who were unable to walk were assessed through estimated heights and weights using the equations proposed by Rabito et al 16 for assessing hospitalized individuals. The weight estimate calculation included arm circumference, abdominal circumference, calf circumference and arm semi-span.…”

“…The weight estimate calculation included arm circumference, abdominal circumference, calf circumference and arm semi-span. 16 Nutritional status was classified using the BMI, and the cutoff points used were: underweight (BMI ≤ 22 kg/m²), normal weight (BMI between 22 and 27 kg/m²) and overweight (BMI > 27 kg/m²). 17 In order to classify the patients based on abdominal circumference, the cutoff values of 102 cm and 88 cm, for men and women respectively, were used to consider whether an individual presented abdominal obesity.…”
