Non-detection of Epstein-Barr virus and human papillomavirus in a region of high gastric cancer risk indicates a lack of a role for these viruses in gastric carcinomas

Abstract: Gastric mucosa tissue was collected from patients with gastroduodenal diseases in a region of norrteastern China showing a high risk of gastric cancer incidence. The presence of EBV and HPV were assayed to investigate the relationship between gastric carcinomas and virus infection. Neither EBV nor HPV DNA was detected in tissue from the patients. The role of EBV and HPV in gastric cancer is not well understood and still needs to be clarified.

“…In addition, 15 studies provided the prevalence of HPV in different histological differentiations of patients with GC, which were divided into well-differentiated, moderately differentiated, poorly differentiated, and undifferentiated grades 16–30. Some studies provided concrete information about HPV prevalence in different clinical stages (TNM: I, II, III, and IV),16,19,27,31,32 the age and sex15,16,18,19,25,27,32 of the patients, and specific HPV types (HPV16 and HPV18) 15,16,20–24,29–31,33–39Table 1 provides the information about the studies.…”

“…Sixteen studies provided data on specific HPV types (including HPV16 and HPV18) 15,16,20–24,29–31,33–39. HPV16 was found in 210 (21%) of the 992 GC cases, whereas HPV18 was found in 90 (7%) of the 992 GC cases, with a significant OR of 3.314 (95% CI: 1.617, 6.792).…”

“…However, HPV-16 was the most common type identified in the upper digestive tract in a study reported by Xu et al (7). In addition, Yuan et al (19) did not detect HPV in gastric cancer in China. Erol et al (20) investigated 106 gastric cancer samples and identified HPV DNA in 33 cases.…”

“…Viral E6 and E7 oncoproteins that inactivate tumor suppressor proteins p53 and retinoblastoma are required for malignant transformation, the net effect of HPV E6 and E7 proteins is to block apoptosis and remove the restrains to cell proliferation (10). a few studies have focused on the role of HPV in the development of gastric cancer, with controversial result, some indicate the presence of HPV especially type16 (11), while other rule out the presence of HPV in gastric cancer (12), (13), (14).The present study was designed to study the presence of HPV by employing immunohistochemical methods in gastric cancer sections.…”
