Expression levels of candidate genes for intramuscular fat deposition in two Banna mini-pig inbred lines divergently selected for fatness traits

Abstract: Intramuscular fat (IMF) content plays an important role in meat quality. Many genes involved in lipid and energy metabolism were identified as candidate genes for IMF deposition, since genetic polymorphisms within these genes were associated with IMF content. However, there is less information on the expression levels of these genes in the muscle tissue. This study aimed at investigating the expression levels of sterol regulating element binding protein-1c (SREBP-1c), diacylglycerol acyltransferase (DGAT-1), h… Show more

“…For the genome wide association study (GWAS), the PCs, the Norberg angle averaged over each dog, and the angle of inclination averaged over each dog were analyzed in a linear mixed model framework using the program GEMMA v.0.94 [33]. Only SNPs with minor allele frequency (MAF) > 0.05 were included in the analysis and a significance threshold of P  < 3.5×10 −7 (the Bonferroni-adjusted genome wide P -value < 0.05) was used.…”

“…For example, increased expression of FABP3 in the muscle of fat Banna mini‐pig inbred line than that in the lean line was reported by Zhao, Li, et al. () and Zhao, Tian, et al. ().…”

“…Higher expression levels of these two genes were related to higher IMF content or tender meat in different species. For example, increased expression of FABP3 in the muscle of fat Banna mini-pig inbred line than that in the lean line was reported by Zhao, Li, et al (2012) and Zhao, Tian, et al (2012). Similarly, significant difference in the expression of FABP3 were observed in the breast muscle of two lines of Beijing-You chickens selected for IMF content: UL (selected up) and DL (selected down; Li et al, 2013).…”

“…Intramuscular fat (IMF) content is an important determinant of meat quality in the pig (Gerbens et al, 2000;Sanchez et al, 2007;Lee et al, 2010b), and is positively correlated with quality characteristics such as juiciness, flavor, and tenderness (Fernandez et al, 1999;Gerbens et al, 1999Gerbens et al, , 2000Zhao et al, 2012). Fatty acid (FA) composition serves as an indicator of lipid quality (Sanchez et al, 2007;Lee et al, 2010b).…”
