Genetic diversity of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) and dopamine b-hydroxylase (DBH) genes in cattle breeds

Abstract: DNA from four cattle breeds was used to re-sequence all of the exons and 56% of the introns of the bovine tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) gene and 97% and 13% of the bovine dopamine β-hydroxylase (DBH) coding and non-coding sequences, respectively. Two novel single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and a microsatellite motif were found in the TH sequences. The DBH sequences contained 62 nucleotide changes, including eight non-synonymous SNPs (nsSNPs) that are of particular interest because they may alter protein funct… Show more

“…Significant DBH haplotype differences between Brahman cattle and the three B. t. taurus breeds, Charolais, Holstein, and Lidia, were found. The authors stated that detected polymorphism is interesting from a behavioural point of view because of the observed differences in temperament between these breeds (Lourenco-Jaramillo et al 2012).…”

“…A theme of involvement in neural development and synaptic function is evident amongst the candidates. A notable absence from this list of candidates are SNP in genes encoding adrenergic receptors or enzymes tyrosine hydroxylase and dopamine-β-hydroxylase involved in the dopaminenorepinephrine-epinephrine synthesis pathway, which harbor known polymorphisms in cattle (Hu et al, 2010;Lourenco-Jaramillo et al, 2012). For a review of candidate genes associated with other behavioral traits in cattle see Friedrich et al (2015).…”

“…At the molecular level, Lourenco-Jaramillo et al (2012), found significantly different haplotype distributions of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) located in two key enzymes (tyrosine hydroxylase and dopamine beta-hydroxylase) for dopamine and noradrenaline production. The authors proposed that these SNPs could be related to differences in temperament related to the genetic background of cattle (Lourenco-Jaramillo et al, 2012).…”
