Genetic parameters and selection strategies for soybean genotypes resistant to the stink bug-complex

Abstract: Soybean genotypes resistant to stink bugs are derived from complex breeding processes obtained through indirect selection. The aim of the present work was to estimate genetic parameters for guiding selection strategies towards resistant genotypes, based on those traits associated with responses to pod-attacking stink bugs, such as the grain filling period (GFP), leaf retention (LR), percentage index of pod damage (PIPD) and percentage of spotted seeds (PSS). We assessed the parental lines IAC-100 (resistant) a… Show more

“…For GFP, the estimated heritability value was of 0.58, higher than the number found by Godoi and Pinheiro (). The heritability for GFP in the previous work was of 36.06%, in narrow sense.…”

“…Estimates based on genotypes mean tend to result in higher values of heritability, as the effect of the residual variance is divided by the number of blocks and by the number of locations. For LR, heritability value was of 67%, also superior to 20% found by Godoi and Pinheiro () and 20.6%, by Santos ().…”

“…For example, ‘PI 274454’ was found to contribute exclusively to group B, but only with approximately 1.56%. These low-contributing exclusive ancestors are probably due to their restricted use in cultivar development to transfer certain specific characteristics, as is the case of ‘PI 274454’ mentioned above, which is reported to be an insect-resistant cultivar that contributed to the pedigree of ‘IAC-100’, a moderately insect-resistant Brazilian cultivar (Fernandes et al , 1994; de Godoi and Pinheiro 2009). …”
