Low levels of genetic diversity depicted from mitochondrial DNA sequences in a heavily exploited marine fish (Cynoscion acoupa, Sciaenidae) from the Northern coast of Brazil

Abstract: The acoupa weakfish (Cynoscion acoupa -Sciaenidae) is a marine species of croaker with estuarine-dependent behavior, found in the western Atlantic from Panama to Argentina. It is one of the most exploited food fish on the northern coast of Brazil. In this study, DNA sequences were determined from the entire control region (D-loop) of the mitochondrial genome of 297 individuals collected during seven different months between December 2003 and August 2005 on the northern coast of Brazil (Amapá and Pará). Genetic… Show more

“…Information derived from the analysis of DNA fragments has been increasingly employed in conservation programs. In the specific case of the fish icthyofauna, a large number of studies have confirmed the effectiveness of the mitochondrial control region for the detection of gene flow between populations or species, and the understanding of genetic variation, phylogeographic patterns, and demographic history (Garber et al 2004, Sanz et al 2006, Zhang et al 2006, Gomes et al 2008, Rodrigues et al 2008, Vasconcellos et al 2008.…”

“…Given the implications of such processes for the maintenance of stocks, there is growing interest in the genetic structure of the populations of commercially important fish species (Garber et al 2004, Palstra et al 2007, Santa Brígida et al 2007, Rodrigues et al 2008, Silva-Oliveira et al 2008. These and other studies have generated an essential database for the development of systematic management strategies for fish stocks.…”

“…Estos autores sugirieron que F. commersonii podría estar atravesando un cuello de botella. Otro caso similar fue observado por Rodrigues et al (2008) en Cynoscion acoupa. Los autores obtuvieron 43 haplotipos en 297 individuos, sugiriendo que podría deberse a la reducción del tamaño efectivo de la población.…”

“…(Grant & Bowen, 1998;Lowe, Harris, & Ashton, 2004).A rapid population growth can enhance the retention of new mutations in the population (Grant & Bowen, 1998). High haplotype diversity and low nucleotide diversity has been reported in many marine organisms such as Cynoscionacoupa (Rodrigues et al, 2008), Architecuthis dux (Winkelmann et al, 2013) and Girellapunctata (Saito et al, 2008) that have undergone a severe demographic reduction.…”
