Molecular evidence of polyphyletism in the plant genus Carum L. (Apiaceae)

Abstract: An analysis of internal transcribed spacer (ITS) DNA sequences of the four species of Carum L. (Apiaceae) known in Italy revealed that this genus is polyphyletic. Maximum parsimony with bootstrap resampling, maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference analyses resulted in three distinct clades: Carum carvi L. clustered within tribe Careae Baill. (former Aegopodium clade); Hellenocarum multiflorum (= Carum multiflorum), Carum heldreichii and Carum appuanum clustered within the tribe Pyramidoptereae Boiss.; and H.… Show more

“…Other recent studies (Papini, 2006; Valiejo‐Roman et al. , 2006b; Papini, Banci & Nardi, 2007) have shown that Schulzia crinita (Pall.) Spreng., Tamamschjanella rubella (E.Busch) Pimenov & Kljuykov, Hellenocarum multiflorum (Sm.)…”

“…Gibbs sampling and MCMC methods allow relatively easy analysis in models where standard likelihood calculations are extremely difficult (Walsh 2001). The Bayesian method has been applied to examine heterogeneity in genetic samples (Roeder et al 1998); evaluate genetic diversity (Holsinger 1999); examine phylogeny (Delgado-Salinas et al 2006;Papini et al 2007); and map multiple Quantitative Trait Loci (QTL) (Heath 1997;Sillanpaa and Arjas 1998;Ball 2001;Broman and Speed 2002).…”

“…Indeed, the nucleotide sequences of the internal transcribed spacer region were used as molecular markers in order to establish phylogenetic relationships of some Apiaceae genera like Chamaesciadium C. A. Meyer (Papini 2006) and Carum L. (Papini et al 2007). It have been demonstrated that this last genus is polyphyletic.…”
