Cytogenetic analysis and chromosomal characteristics of the polymorphic 18S rDNA in the fish Prochilodus lineatus (Characiformes, Prochilodontidae)

Abstract: We used differential staining techniques (BSG, GTG, AgNO 3 , DAPI and CMA 3 banding) and fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) with 5S and 18S probes to investigated the karyotypic and cytogenetic chracteristics of Prochilodus lineatus specimens from a population in Vila Velha state park (Parque Estadual de Vila Velha, Ponta Grossa, Paraná state, southern Brazil). The specimens studied showed the same karyotype as that found in other P. lineatus populations, i.e. 2n = 54 biarmed chromosomes (40m + 14 sm) an… Show more

“…population, is suggested as a conserved condition for different fish groups (Jesus & Moreira-Filho, 2003;Hatanaka & Galetti, 2004;Vicari et al, 2006). Almeida-Toledo et al (2002) observed similar details to the present study, with an 5S rDNA site co-localized with 28S rDNA in two acrocentric pairs, in a population of Astyanax paranae of the rio Tietê and in a population of A. aff.…”

“…Heteromorphisms of NORs are very common in fish and they are likely determined by unequal cross-over, gene duplication, transposition, or other rearrangements involving homologous chromosomal segments (Borin and Martins-Santos, 1999;Vicari et al, 2003Vicari et al, , 2006. Such NOR heteromorphic condition has already been formerly reported in a population of I. labrosus from the Capivara reservoir, Paraná, Brazil (Carvalho and Dias, 2007).…”

“…The polymorphism of the NORs is a relatively common event in Neotropical fish (e.g. Foresti et al, 1981;Brum et al;Vicari et al, 2006 ).…”

“…The occurrence of 18S and 5S ribosomal DNA sites in synteny is rare in vertebrates and has only been reported in a few organisms, such as the fish species Salmo salar (Linnaeus, 1758) (Pendás et al, 1994), Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum, 1792) (Moran et al, 1996), Prochilodus argenteus (Hatanaka & Galetti, 2004), Prochilodus lineatus (Valenciennes, 1836) (Jesus et al, 2003;Vicari et al, 2006), five species of the genus Astyanax (Almeida-Toledo et al, 2002) and amphibians (Lucchini et al, 1993). Moreover, the loci have been mapped on different chromosomes in several fish species (Morán et al, 1996;Wasko et al, 2001), a condition often found in vertebrates (Lucchini et al, 1993;Suzuki et al, 1996).…”
