Genetic characterization of the population of São Luís, MA, Brazil

Abstract: Five loci (vWA1, F13A1, D12S67, Apo-B and D1S80) were investigated by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis followed by silver staining in a sample of 177 individuals from the population of São Luís, State of Maranhão, Brazil. A total of 70 different alleles were identified. A statistically significant deviation from the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium was observed in a single locus (F13A1, p = 0.0075). The average heterozygosity (H) was estimated at 77.7%, the mean number of alleles per locus as 14. The PD (capacity … Show more

“…The high contribution of Africans to the gene pool of our African descent sample of Jequié differs from that seen in previous studies of northeastern Brazilian populations (Callegari-Jacques et al 2003; Ferreira et al 2005), possibly due to the careful choice of African-descendants by the morphological ethnic classification (Azevêdo, 1980) used in our study.…”

“…The population from the state of Maranhão, located in the Northeast region of Brazil, is also composed by the miscegenation between European, African, and Native American populations 10 , 25 . This fact was noted in our study through the analysis of genomic ancestry.…”

“…Several studies have been conducted in Brazil in order to determine the population's autosomal ancestry and its regional differences 10 – 12 , 17 , 24 , 25 ; and also the ancestry of the paternal lineage through Y-STR (Y- chromosomal Short Tandem Repeats) and Y-SNP (Y- chromosomal Single Nucleotide Polymorphism) markers; however, there is little information regarding the population of Maranhão 26 29 . Our study aimed to analyze the pattern of autosomal and Y chromosome ancestry in the general population and in patients with T1D in the state of Maranhão and to evaluate these findings with the genetic profile of HLA class II in these patients.…”

“…Além disso, não foram investigados outros genes que estão envolvidos na fisiopatogênese do AER, como o HLA-G, que é reconhecidamente um fator imunológico protetor para evitar reação aloimune mãe-feto 24,25 . Um estudo de caracterização genética da população de São Luís, Maranhão, mostrou uma diversidade genética, com influência de povos ameríndios, africanos e europeus, caracterizando uma região altamente miscigenada 26 .…”
