Comparative cytogenetic studies of Bufo ictericus, B. paracnemis (Amphibia, Anura) and an intermediate form in sympatry

Abstract: Specimens of Bufo ictericus, Bufo paracnemis and a third type, considered an intermediate subgroup between these species, were cytogenetically studied by conventional Giemsa staining, C-banding and staining of the nucleolus organizer region (NOR). The nuclear DNA content and seroproteins were also analyzed to characterize these species, and verify the possibility of hybridization between them. Karyotypes and cytogenetic markers were essentially equal on the basis of the methods used. The DNA nuclear content fo… Show more

“…The diploid chromosome number (2n = 22) of the five Rhinella species analyzed here agree with those presented by other authors (Beçak 1968;Morescalchi 1973;Duellman & Trueb 1994;King 1990;Azevedo et al 2003;Amaro-Ghilardi et al 2008).…”

“…Moreover, cytogenetic studies using conventional staining technique provide valuable information on the great karyotype diversity shown by these animals. Analyses of cytogenetic markers, including the number and karyotype formula, sex determination, B chromosomes, number and location of nucleolar organizer regions (NORs), heterochromatin distribution, G-banding and R-banding, treatments with basespecific fluorochromes and, more recently, in situ hybridization techniques, allowed the cytogenetic characterization of populations, species, and supra-specific groups (Vitturi et al 2000, Swarça et al 2001, Carvalho et al 2002, Azevedo et al 2003, Affonso and Galetti, Jr. 2005.…”
